GANDEN MONASTERY: Ganden is situated in the most spectacular way of the three major monasteries around Lhasa:
It is seated on top (on the shoulder) of a mountain, formed like the old roman or greek theaters of the past. You have to climb steep curves to reach it on a height of 4500m. But it also suffered the strongest damages by the Chinese. You will see many ruins, so you can imagine its former size. But there are also many renovations going on and parts get built up again, which gives hope for the future.
One of the most spectacular things you can do at Ganden is the HIGH Kora which climbs up the peak on the left side for quite some additional meters, which make it close to 5.000m! From the top you have a great surrounding panorama down on the monastery and further down into the different valleys on the sides!
There is also a LOW Kora to do, but it is not as spectacular as the high one.
You can get to Ganden from Lhasa by public bus, departing in front of the place of the Jokhang Temple. It took about 1h and both ways was 20 Yuan. You are totally free to travel there on your own. On the way back you will stop at another minor temple/monastery, since this is more a pilgrimage for Tibetans than a tourist bus (thats why you have to live with this 'beautiful' music on the bus, if you are lucky).

A three day trek that started from Ganden Monastery and followed the well-known Ganden to Samye route, but on the third day we opted to take a detour down a valley and back to lower altitude due to altitude sickness that one of our party was experiencing. Do not underestimate altitude issues in Tibet: although we were on Diamox, we started the trek a day or two too early, and going over the 5250m (17,224 foot) Shug-la pass when not yet properly acclimatized was no joke. It sure was awesome though!

Ganden Monastery is located at the top of Wangbur Mountain, 36 kilometers ENE from the Potala Palace in Lhasa, at an altitude of 4300m. Ganden had a population of 6,000 monks in the early 20th century. It was the original monastery of the Geluk order, founded by Tsongkhapa in 1409.
The Ganden Monastery was completely destroyed following the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959, and since the 1980s has been re-building.
