Women on Ivy League campuses across America and poor women from around the world are being heavily recruited to "donate" their eggs to fertility clinics and now for cloning research.
Sadly, egg donation has less to do with altruism and more to do with the exploitation of women--particularly young women and often poor women who are usually facing large debts or just trying to make ends meet. Egg donation puts women's health and safety at risk. Newer trends in fertility medicine are moving away from current practices which are harmful to infertile women but neglect the nameless, faceless egg donor women.
People of all political and religious stripes have organized all around the world to call attention to the risks of egg donation practices.

On a daily basis older men exploit young girls and use secret abortions to cover up their crimes. Hear Planned Parenthood staff in many California cities (and other states) caught on tape telling a 13-year-old girl that they will conceal her sexual exploitation by a 22-year-old predator. No young girl should undergo any invasive medical procedure performed secretly by an unknown person at an unknown location. Help protect young girls from sexual abuse. Learn why those who cover up this crime are responsible for future victims. Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation have made a conscious decision to conceal the sexual exploitation of underage girls and protect the men who commit these crimes. The rate at which these two organizations fail to comply with mandatory reporting laws is in excess of 90 percent. Even though many of these clinic workers openly acknowledged that this situation is illegal and that they were required to report it to the state, the overwhelming majority readily agreed to conceal this illegal sexual activity. It was not uncommon for the Planned Parenthood or National Abortion Federation representative to warn callers that if someone were to find out about this situation her boyfriend could go to jail. In states with parental involvement legislation often callers are informed about this option while also being instructed not to tell the judge about the age of her boyfriend. In some instances these employees even encouraged her to lie to the judge if specifically asked for that information. Other employees advised her that neighboring states have no parental involvement requirements and that if she went there and either concealed or lied about the age issue, she would have no problem getting a secret abortion. In some calls she was given instructions on how to circumvent the parental involvement requirement altogether, even to the point of suggesting that she bring someone along to sign for her who looked old enough to impersonate one of her parents. Sometimes callers are told that, technically speaking, the clinic was required to report this activity to the state but that if the caller would either lie about her age or just keep her mouth shut when she came in for her abortion no one would ask any questions. Several times callers are told that the facility had no interest in the ages of the parties involved or that they do not verify ages or check IDs and would accept whatever she told them at face value. Unfortunately, situations like those described here are neither rare nor isolated. In the end, the vast majority of Planned Parenthood and National Abortion Federation facilities that contacted were willing to illegally conceal the sexual abuse. In every case, the clinic representative had never met this child, knew virtually nothing about her, had only engaged in a brief telephone conversation with her, and was told nothing to indicate that her parents would be abusive if they discovered the sexual relationship. Nevertheless, these clinic workers were willing - and in many cases eager - to help hide the fact that teens are being sexually exploited from her parents and the authorities. Toward that end, they provided step-by-step instructions on how to circumvent state laws that were enacted specifically for the purpose of protecting children exactly like her, in situations just like this. Q. I steal shit from my boss. Does that cancel out exploitation?
No. Stealing shit from your boss doesn't change the fact that you are producing more value than you are paid for. It's very unlikely that you could steal enough from your boss to make up the difference. If everyone did this the company would cease to make a profit- so this isn't really a long run strategy for economic justice.
The more important point though is probably this: there are lots of ways in which workers resist exploitation. They work slower, they don't let their managers know how fast they could work, they sabotage things, they milk the clock, in short they play lots of little games that give them the subjective sense that they are maintaining some of autonomy and dignity within the degradations of wage labor. These games are a double-edged sword: on one hand workers are carving out autonomous space that allows them to survive psychologically in a realm where they have little control over their labor; on the other hand, this works as a temporary pallative that gives workers a false sense of control and comfort, keeping them from addressing the real problem: capitalism.
Q. The bars downtown charge more for the same beer than the ones in west philly. Does that mean they are exploiting their workers more even though those workers do the same amount of work?
Differences in price can be attributed to many things. Exploitation needs to be seen as an underlying process expressed in prices which fluctuate around an equilibrium. In your case rent is probably the biggest factor in the difference in price. Rent is another big issue that I hope to address at length elsewhere.
Q. I am self-employed. Do I exploit myself?
A:No. You are not creating value for a capitalist who then pays you for only a portion of that value. Self employed people are an autonomous class separate from workers and capitalists. Of course, many people who are are nominally self-emplyed sub-contract or do part-time work as wage laborers. Self employed people are often put in the same category as the petit bourgeois. There are many types of self employed people: carpenters, piano teachers, house servants,
Q. I work for the government. Am I exploited?
Surely your experience as a government employee is similar to the lived experience of those of us employed by capitalists: you work for a wage and your employer wants to maximize the amount of labor he/she gets out of you. The government seeks to raise productivity relative to labor cost. Yet the government is not making a profit from you when it does this because it isn't selling your product as a commodity. (unless you work for a government run enterprise.) Thus many government employees- teachers, secretaries, cops- do not produce surplus value for a capitalist. However their jobs are essential to the process of surplus value creation that happens elsewhere in the economy. (teachers train future workers. cops protect private property. etc.) The question then is whether these people who don't produce surplus value but whose jobs are crucial to the economic order can be considered exploited. I think this depends on our definition of the concept of exploitation and what we are using it for. But I will venture, for now, that the answer should be a "qualified yes". I hope to go into this further in my future video on Productive and Unproductive labor.
Q. I work for a non-profit. Am I exploited?
Many non-profits still make a profit. Many sell commodities. Others- social services, churches, etc. pay their employees with donated or government money. Though the employees may do useful, purposeful work, they don't create profit for a capitalist and thus fall outside of the scope of capitalist production relations- they don't produce surplus value. This then leads to the same answer as the previous question about government employees. But still the bigger question is: if you don't produce surplus value does that mean you can't be exploited? Stay tuned for a future video entitled "Who is exploited?" that will address these questions more deeply.
Q. How can I not exploit my employees?
Turn your enterprise into a cooperatively owned and run workplace. Employees vote on their salaries, on reinvestment strategies, etc. Everyone has a say in decisions equal to the degree that those decisions effect them. Then go get a book called Parecon by Michael Albert. Use your vast powers as a capitalist to create the society he describes.

Tthe other limit to this "lowering wages" tactic is "class struggle". Workers don't like having their wages cut. They fight against it. Their resistance can take the form of isolated acts of sabotage/slowing down/stealing... It can also take the form of organized collective action- strikes, unions... If there is a decent rate of unemployment, your best weapon against this is to just fire the troublesome workers and hire new ones. You can use violence or the threat of violence to break a union. For instance, a popular tactic is to find the leaders of the union and have them tortured or killed.
Another way to lower the cost of reproducing the worker: make the standard of living cheaper. If the capitalists that make consumer goods like food/housing/clothes/gas find ways to reduce the costs of their commodities, this will lower the cost of reproducing the worker, thus making it possible to lower wages.
If slashing wages isn't possible for whatever reason make them work harder and more efficiently. This raises S relative to V, thus raising the rate of exploitation. There are many ways to do this. The most obvious is to just force your workers to work faster- set production quotas, threaten them, abuse them, limit bathroom breaks, etc.
But these tactics are most effective when combined with more efficient tactics. If you want to increase the output of each worker you are going to need to make the production process more efficient.
How much more surplus can you get from reorganizing production in a more efficient way? Given your current machines and workspace you will eventually hit a limit. That is why it is important to constantly be investing in new machines, new factories- investments in c. Even though constant capital can't produce surplus, more efficient technologies can allow workers to produce more surplus. So if you buy faster computers for your office, faster machines for your assembly line or faster sewing machines for your sweatshop, your employees can work faster, producing more surplus.
Throughout the capitalist world capitalists are always trying to find ways to speed up production. In situations where workers don't have any power to resist this speed up production can take on a dizzying pace. As you introduce these "labor-saving" technologies into your production you won't need as many workers. This is a great time to fire people. This has the effect of increasing unemployment which is very good for you. Unemployment drives down wages and makes it easier to replace workers who resist exploitation.
Investing in new machinery is one of the most popular ways of getting more work out of workers. It produces far more surplus than any of the other methods we have discussed. It also seems to have no limit. Of course, once your new innovative machinery allows you to start outselling other capitalists in the marketplace they are going to want one too. You can try to keep your technology secret, patent it, etc. but eventually other capitalists are going to catch up with you. Once this happens the "socially necessary labor time" it takes to make your commodities goes down. This brings the value of your commodities down. This means that you are no longer extracting as much surplus per worker as you were before. Now what are you going to do?
Invest in newer machines! The race goes on. Capitalists are constantly adding new technologies, reorganizing production, cutting wages, using all of the strategies I've just discussed in and endless quest to raise the rate of exploitation. But as soon as those new technologies and strategies become standard across an industry they are forced to come up with new strategies. Competition never ceases! Innovation never ceases. Class struggle never ceases.
This constant quest to squeeze more profit from your workforce may be viewed by some as immoral. Yes- as a capitalist you have an extraordinary amount of social power. Your decisions have a direct effect on the lives of many people- sometimes all of society. If you worry about the social consequences of your decisions it will interfere with your ability to maximize profit. Whenever you are being less immoral, some other capitalist is being more immoral. When the two of you meet in the marketplace, you will lose. This is why capitalist culture has generated a world view in which capitalists believe that 1. they are providing a positive social function by "providing quality products to consumers" instead of providing quality lives to workers; and 2. That following the profit motif is morally justifiable because if they don't do it someone else will. If you can get yourself to believe these 2 things you should do fine as a capitalist.
