Le 31 mars 1982, la France offre à Angelo Branduardi trois heures de direct dans son émission la plus prestigieuse, Le Grand Echiquier présenté par Jacques Chancel.
Voici l'une des plus belles «A la foire de l'est» en version longue, chanson très populaire en France et ici parfaitement équilibrée musicalement. Elle est dynamisante, c'est un grand feu d'artifice de sons et de rythmes avec l'antique launeddas de Luigi Lai en arrière plan musical ainsi qu'une prolongation. Elle fut jadis le déclencheur de ce Grand Echiquier consacré à Angelo. En effet, quelques années auparavant, Angelo et ses musiciens enregistraient « La Foire de l'Est » pour un Grand Echiquier consacré à un autre artiste français, la version durait environ 12 minutes.
Lorsque l'enregistrement fut terminé, Jacques Chancel vint trouver Angelo pour lui dire « On ne pourra pas passer votre chanson à l'émission ! »

J. Chancel : « Car je viens de comprendre que vous méritiez une émission entière... »

Here one of most beautiful "A la foire de l'est" in long version, very popular song in France and perfectly balanced here musicaly. It's instigating, it's a large fireworks of sounds and rhythms with the antique launeddas of Luigi Lai in musical background as well as a prolongation. It was formerly the release of this Grand Echiquier devoted to Angelo. Indeed, a few years before, Angelo and its musicians recorded "A la foire de l'est" for a Grand Echiquier devoted to another French artist, the version lasted approximately 12 minutes.
When the recording was finished, Jacques Chancel found Angelo to say to him "One will not be able to pass your song to the emission! "
AB :"And why I request from you? "
J. Chancel :"Because I have just understood that you deserve a whole emission... "

«...Il y a deux chansons particulièrement représentatives de ce que je souhaite faire en 81 : « Châteaux et Fanaux » et « Musica ». Mais si je me lance dans l'exploration de formules rythmiques nouvelles, il s'agit toujours d'Angelo Branduardi et le concept de « rock paysan » est toujours présent. Tout ce que j'ai fais se mélange à de nouvelles idées, de nouvelles influences musicales. Mon idée est de m'ouvrir, de m'ouvrir encore plus, j'ai toujours aimé les grandes confusions, les minestrones, pourquoi pas y ajouter de nouveaux ingrédients ? "... There are two songs particularly representative of what I wish to do into 81: "Châteaux et Fanaux" and "Musica". But if I launch out in the exploration of new rhythmic formulas, it's always about Angelo Branduardi and the concept of "country rock'n'roll" is always present. All that I have make mixes with new ideas, new musical influences. Is my idea to open to me, to open even more, I always liked great confusions, the minestrones, why not add new ingredients to it? Compared to what I did before, I travel simply a little more. The problem not being to make some less but to be worthier..."
In this version, we can appreciate particular the percussions of Joji Hirota, Piercarlo Zanco and the electric guitar of Ronnie Jackson.

Released in 1962 on the album Let's Face The Music and as a single. The single reached number five in the UK chart and stayed for 17 weeks. The song is available on CD on a digitally remastered album. A new studio recording with the London Symphony Orchestra was released in 1984 on the album I Am What I Am. A live recording is available for example on the 1997 The Birthday Concert and on the video Shirley Bassey Live In Cardiff.
This was originally the French song "Et Maintenant" by Gilbert Bécaud 1961.
Gilbert Bécaud was born as François Silly 1927 in France. He began to earn money from music at the age of 20, playing piano and composing film music, alias Francois Bécaud. In 1948 he met the lyricist Pierre Delanoë, who became his friend and they wrote many successes together. In the 1950's Bécaud also wrote for Edith Piaf. From 1952 he finally used the name Gilbert Bécaud. Because of his temperament on his appearances, he became "Monsieur 100.000 Volt", "Monsieur Dynamite" and "Le champignon atomique". Bécaud wrote many successful chansons, sometimes mixed with jazz elements. He has also had some success with cantatas, operas and music for film. Gilbert Bécaud published a new album 1999 and gave great concerts until he died 2001. Other songs of Gilbert Bécaud recorded by Shirley Bassey are Love On The Rocks, and It Must Be Him.
"Et Maintenant" has been re-recorded more than 150 times.

Shirley's Musical Director was Peter Tomasso. His precise attention to detail is noticeable. He seems to look at Shirley for split-second timing cues as often as he looks at his orchestra. You can also see Peter do this on the Berlin concert.
Jacques Chancel is a journalist and French writer born on July 2, 1928.
He was a War correspondent in Indo-China from the age of 17 years.
From 1950 to 1958 he covered South-East Asia and worked between Saigon and Beijing.
In 1968, he directed various news broadcasts and created a popular programme called Radioscopie. Jacques anchored it for twenty years with 6,800 transmissions on France-Inter.
He took part in the creation of the television channel Antenne 2.
He presented Le Grand Echiquer chat show for many years until the mid-nineties.
Jacques Chancel is today an administrator of the Canal+ Group and advises its president Bertrand Méheut.
He is member of the Haut Conseil de la Francophonie.
