Cobus - *Nsync - Pop (DRUMS COVER) - 164 sec
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cobus-Potgieter/18074843749 This is a drum cover (from the TRI-cam Series) of *Nsync's song, Pop. I edited this song so that it's 10% faster than the original album version.. makes things more interesting :) This is technically not at all accurate, but that wasn't the intention of the 'cover'. This is not so much a drum cover as a my personal rendition of the song :) This is pretty much a rock/funk cover of a VERY "pop" song, which made things really interesting.. i have to say i'm quite pleased with the outcome. *NSYNC - Pop from the 2001 release Celebrity is the copyrigthed property of its owner. (This is a mix 10% faster than the original album version.) (External) Drums by Cobus Potgieter | jaapvlooi@gmail.com *TECHNICAL INFO* (with my last cover series, the Overhead Series, i got an insane amount of questions about my set-up.. so here's an in detail description of how i made these covers..) Drumkit: Tama Superstar Custom; in the Blue Metallic Fade Heads: Toms TOP: Remo Powerstroke 3, Clear. Toms BOTTOM: stock heads. Snare TOP: Remo Emperor, Coated. Snare BOTTOM: stock head. Bassdrum BATTER: Remo Powerstroke 4, Clear. Cymbals: Paiste PST 5 UNIVERSAL setup: 14" Hats 16" Crash 20" Ride Secondary Ride: Zildjian Planet Z (very muted, tightly screwed down) Secondary Crash: Paiste 502 16" Crash *RECORDING* I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY *ONE* stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both seperate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such.

Run to the Hills: Real Drums (READ THE INFO) - 233 sec
EDIT: If you look in the window, it is NOT a person: I have no idea how any of you could possibly see the plant right outside my window, in my backyard, which is closed off by a fence, as a person. I mean, don't you think i'd notice them in the window? :P The reason it's blowing around is because of the wind. Also, people have been accusing me of speeding this up. Think about how hard it would be to play a song slower than usual, and then speed it up, and have everything match up with the song: not to mention, the pitch of everything would be much higher in real life had i sped it up, not to mention obvious things such as my movements, etc. This video is not sped up, and it's kind of silly to think that I would actually resort to something like that in any of my videos. ========================= So, here it is. An actual Rock Band song, translated to drums, so to speak. The beginning is off time for some reason, but it syncs up soon thereafter. I screw up a few times, due to lack of practicing it on real drums: parts like where the red notes suddenly go from the hi-hat to the toms are a bit hard to time. Also, i took liberties on some parts of the song: I don't have two crash cymbals, so I had to hit the same one for when the blue and green are supposed to be seperate crashes, as well as hitting the snare during the 4x red, 4x yellow, 4x blue etc. rolls instead of a fourth tom which isn't on my set. The way I set this up was to let the song play out on practice mode, not hitting anything, and muting the drums in the options. (That's why the notechart shows me missing all the notes.) Then, i just spliced the audio together. I notice it's kind of hard to hear the bass pedal: however if you look at my leg, and the reflection of my foot on the floor tom, you can clearly see it going to the beat and hitting the pedal when it's supposed to; even if you can't hear it. Yes, the cymbals need to be loosened, however, the set was used when we bought it: the previous owners did not take care of it, and thus if you loosen it, sometimes the entire cymbal pops off. this is also why the drumset sounds like crap. The china cymbal was broken because of a neighbor abusing the set. The hi-hat pedal is also broken, which is why I can't lift it up to do the final hit on the patterns in the intro to the song.

Blackened (Rock Band Expert Drums 5 Stars) - 417 sec
read this first please: EDIT: new highest score, 293,000+, goin for 300,000 :D people are asking me the same questions over and over, so reading this should help answer a lot of the generic ones. Still, I appreciate the comments/views and stuff, don't get me wrong. Check out the rest of my videos if you want to. I do music videos for a part-time-professional job, so that's what most of my work on here is. So I got my 6th new drumset; it's pretty damned bad, so I invented yet another mod, and got this video of me playing Blackened on Expert. I can definitely improve on this: it's definitely gold-starrable. And yes, at :43, i'm mimicing the guitar player, because it was just something stupid to do. The reason I have socks with rubber bands on my drum heads is for increased sensitivity and lowered double-hits: details about it can be found here: http://rockband.scorehero.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3807 (my gamertag = sskitzzo) And yes, I play drums in real life, have been for 4+ years, so the people going on about "play a real instrument", no, sorry, I do play real drums. FINALLY, my grip is fine for playing this game; play on this set before you say that, playing on this set is NOTHING like playing on a real drumset in terms of size, height, feel, movements needed, or anything else. Not trying to be a dick with all this, just informing people so they don't keep on saying the same stuff, haha, but don't get me wrong, I appreciate the comments.

Cobus - Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Face Down (Drums Cover) - 201 sec
Laus Deo Semper. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Cobus-Potgieter/18074843749 [www.cobuspotgieter.com] This is a drum cover of RJA's song, Face Down. AWESOME song, insane drumming, loved covering this, one of my all-time favorites. I have to emphasize, I know calling this a "cover" is wrong, seeing as I only PARTLY stayed true to the song's drums, through the WHOLE song i play some variations of the beats, phrasing and fills, I'm NOT aiming to be accurate to the original drums, I'm just aiming to enjoy myself.. :) And I thouroughly succeeded in doing that, I might add ;) Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Face Down from the 2006 release Don't You Fake It is the copyrighted property of its owner. (External) Drums by Cobus Potgieter | jaapvlooi@gmail.com *TECHNICAL INFO* Drumkit: Tama Superstar Custom; in the Blue Metallic Fade Heads: Toms TOP: Remo Powerstroke 3, Clear. Cymbals: Paiste PST 5 UNIVERSAL setup: 14" Hats 16" Crash 20" Ride Secondary Crash: Sabian XS20 Medium-Thin 16" Crash (please note the toms are tuned and equalized for RECORDING purposes, live they need to be tuned a lot more "open" to sound as good as in the recording. and yes, the kit DOES sound that good live :) i had almost NO equalising on the drums themselves, and ONLY removed some low frequencies from the overheads. basically i only levelled the mix and applied compression.) *RECORDING* I miced each individual drum (snare top AND bottom were miced), plus two overheads, ran this through a mixer, got a decent mix and recorded with ONLY *ONE* stereo channel.. no multitrack recorder(s) :) I compressed the final mix to HELL.. to get a more aggressive sound, to make it sit better in with the original song (and hopefully overpower the original drums), detailed compression settings: 20:1 with a threshold of -20db and a compensation gain of 15db, with both separate channels (LEFT and RIGHT, from the mixer) sent to a stereo sub-group, and the compression settings applied to THIS group, it gave a nice compact and aggressive result.. further mastering was needed to equalize the final mix and control peak levels and such, to have it fit in with the original music track.

History of Drums - 451 sec
Performed by Jay Webler,at a local Atlanta private school, during a teacher recital. The "History of Drums" is a solo that goes from Baby Dodds to Steve Gadd, with Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Elvin Jones, Max Roach, etc. in between. This was a solo that I developed when, at the insistance of Rebecca,(one of my 5 children, who thought it would be a neat, I entered a local contest. I won the contest and have since gone back into full time private teaching. EXPLANATION OF SOLO: The popular music of our day did not just pop up one day out of nowhere. The same is true for the styles of Drumming. As with life everything has a beginning in this world. This solo captures 100 years of drumming styles in 8 minutes starting with the old military drumming at the turn of the century: 1. The beginning is a prelude which I use to prepare for what is about to happen. The patterns I am playing on the cymbals are based on a 6/8 March tempo. 2. Upon the conclusion of the prelude I break into a strong 6/8 cadence which is familiar to everybody. This cadence is basic rhythm which early Dixieland drummers based their style on. Coming out of the cadence I begin with the father of Dixieland drumming, Baby Dodds, using a common 2 beat rhythm played on the snare drum. In the old days the drummers did not use ride cymbals as they are used today. The rhythms were played on the snare drum, Sock Cymbal, wood blocks, or anything else they had to hit. As I am playing the Baby Dodd's style I begin to slip in the styles of Gene Krupa, who was credited with bringing drums to the forefront. After a brief stint on the floor tom, playing the famous solo from Sing, Sing, Sing, I begin to go into the styles of Buddy Rich who a drummer that took Big Band Drumming to new levels. After going through a number of the typical Buddy Rich Drum Licks, I close this section with a bunch of flash and crash drumming which seems to please the crowd greatly. 3. When I begin playing the ride cymbal I have made a move into a quasi be-bop style of drumming which followed the swing era. During this section I go through the styles of Max Roach and Elvin Jones. During this period drummers began to develop more sophisticated 4 way co-ordination patterns. I begin to develop this as I begin on the ride cymbal again. With the addition of each limb of my body I bring a different rhythmic pattern based upon the swing rhythm. Upon bringing in the bass drum I am playing 4 different rhythms at one time. I come out of this and go into an explosive Big band style of drumming. 4. I immediately leave the bebop style and go into a Rock Rhythm during which I play various styles of rhythms that are popular in that vain. During the Rock section I include a modified version of a famous drum solo from the Rock Group Iron Butterfly. 5. After playing some transitional rhythms I begin to move into the fusion era. During this era the style called "linear playing" was being developed. I demonstrate this era by playing a section of a piece recorded by Chick Corea who used Steve Gadd as his drummer. Steve Gadd was perhaps the most famous proponent of linear playing. In this style no two limbs are striking any part of the drum set at one time. It has also been revered to as "melodic playing". Upon completed the linear phase I begin to move into Latin phase. This phase has been used quite extensively over the last 30 years and is still being developed. A Samba rhythm is being played on the bass drum while other Latin rhythms are played on the snare drum with the left hand. 6. After completing the "fusion" era I break into the finale with a series of cymbals crashes and a decrescendo on the snare drum. Solo drummers such Buddy Rich and Louis Bellson would often, during long drum solos, go into a open to close (slow to fast), single stroke roll to show off their speed on the drums and exite the audience. I choose to use this technique while maintaining the same tempo that I started with. Using rhythmic notation I go from quarters notes all the way to 32nd notes using single strokes before I begin my final "flash and crash" scene. After completing the crashing cymbals I break into the a quick demo of the 3rd movement of Buddy Rich's West Side Story. This makes the transition back to my original 6/8 rhythm very easy. After completing this I return to the original 6/8 rhythm which brings me right back to where I started from.

this is the first RB video I ever made, go watch my other RB videos, they're a hell of a lot better in every way possible. my current top score on this is 390,000+ yes, i'm a real life drummer, have been for years. no, you do not play RB drums like you do real drums. the tape is there to fix the pads as they were shitty out of the box. if you comment saying "you play this too much/get a life", this was my 2nd try on it, practically the day the game came out: so no, i did not practice this.
