Mozart Piano Concerto 17, Dezsö Ránki, Piano - mvt 1, part 1 - 427 sec
Dezsö Ránki (Steinway piano w/o lid) English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Tate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Concerto In G Major, K.453 No.17 [32.12 total time] first movement, part one part two of the first movement is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VG9KuDgZYtY Recorded at the Imperial Palace of Schönbrunn, Vienna, Austria, 15 November 1990 This is the fourth of six piano concertos Mozart composed in 1784. He hadn't composed any for two years, but did do more symphonies--in fact, all of his symphonies were done by 1784, except the last four. bio on Dezsö Ránki from the Budapest Festival Orchestra website: Dezsõ Ránki was born in Budapest in 1951, studied under Pál Kadosa, and rose to prominence in the early 70s as one of his generation's most outstanding pianists. His first international success was first prize in the Zwickau Schumann Piano Competition. He regularly performs in most European countries, in North and South America and in Japan. He has played with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, the Orchestre National in Paris, the Tokyo NHK and several renowned conductors, such as Sir Georg Solti, Sándor Végh, Lorin Mazel, Zubin Mehta and Iván Fischer. Contemporary music is also very important in his life as an artist, in the last two decades he has given 10-15 concerts annually with his wife, Edit Klukon, interpreting pieces written for piano for four-hands. He has often played with the Budapest Festival Orchestra - Bartók's second piano concerto in Copenhagen in 1998, Liszt's three piano concertos in Belgium, Germany and France in 1999, Mozart's Concerto K.488 at several German festivals in the summer of 2001. In January of 2002 he performed Schumann's Piano Concerto with the BFO in Italy.

Mozart Piano Concerto 17, Dezsö Ránki, Piano - movement 3 - 656 sec
Dezsö Ránki (Steinway piano w/o lid) English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Tate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Concerto In G Major, K.453 No.17 [32.12 total time] third movement, part one of the second movement is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8_W3F4BfE0 Recorded at the Imperial Palace of Schönbrunn, Vienna, Austria, 15 November 1990 Elizabeth Schwarm Glesner writes: With such a busy schedule of concert appearances, Mozart certainly played his new Concerto no. 17 himself, however the specific person for whom it was first intended was his piano student, Barbara von Ployer. The young lady, known as Babette, was the daughter of a Vienna-based Salzburg court agent and was clearly a talented musician, for this concerto demands grace and fluidity from the soloist. It is not notably easier to play than any of the composer's other concerti from this period. On the occasion of the concerto's premiere June 13, 1784, Fraulein von Ployer took the solo part, then joined with her teacher in a performance of his Two-Piano Sonata, K. 448. Mozart had invited the composer Paisiello to witness both the student and the music. Although it is known that Mozart preferred composing over teaching, he must have been gratified to count such a talented young artist amongst his protegees. Fraulein von Ployer was not the only creature of Mozart's acquaintance to carry this concerto in her repertoire. His pet starling also knew the work, for Mozart had devoted some idle moments to teaching the bird the principal theme of the last movement, a theme that is, admittedly, rather chirpy and bird-like in nature. Yet the starling was an imperfect student. One note it sang wrong every time and, according to the composer, another note was consistently held too long. It seems that even the example of the concerto's creator was insufficient to convince Mozart's starling to sing the piece exactly as written.

Mozart Piano Concerto 17, Dezsö Ránki, Piano - mvt 2, part 1 - 376 sec
Dezsö Ránki (Steinway piano w/o lid) English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Tate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Concerto In G Major, K.453 No.17 [32.12 total time] second movement, part one part two of the second movement is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-jzrT5fnSU Recorded at the Imperial Palace of Schönbrunn, Vienna, Austria, 15 November 1990 Sorry about having to split the second movement into two parts like the first. The 10 minute time limit at YouTube necessitated it. The movement is rather long--it is the first slow movement in full sonata form Mozart had composed for a piano concerto since number 12 in A, K 424.

This concerto, with the pleasantly genial first movement, depth of feeling in the second, and fun of the third, seems to prove that contention.

Mozart Piano Concerto 17, Dezsö Ránki, Piano - mvt 2, part 2 Dezsö Ránki (Steinway piano w/o lid) English Chamber Orchestra conducted by Jeffrey Tate Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Piano Concerto In G Major, K.453 No.17 [32.12 total time] second movement, part two of two part one of the second movement is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B8_W3F4BfE0 Recorded at the Imperial Palace of Schönbrunn, Vienna, Austria, 15 November 1990 Elizabeth Schwarm Glesner writes: According to the date that the composer himself noted on the score, the Seventeenth Piano Concerto was completed April 12, 1784, the last of four concerti that he had written in a two month period. Mozart typically produced several piano concerti at the end of each winter. In 1785, he would write two such works in February and March, in 1786, two more. At first glance, the timing of such productivity might seem to be due to a burst of spring fever. However, the actual explanation has less to do with weather than with religion. These numerous concerti were all written during or just before Lent, the six weeks of reflection that precede Easter each year. In Vienna, at the time a very Catholic city, the dramatic theatres usually closed during Lent, depriving the Viennese of a favored source of entertainment. Lacking competition from theatres, concert attendance soared, and musicians capitalized on the demand by presenting even more concerts. Mozart's own letters, as well as contemporary accounts, attest that during Lent he frequently gave three or four concerts each week. As a pianist, he would want some new music to perform on these concerts, hence the series of concerti.
