Both Damia and Piaf recorded "L'Etranger" in 1936. There was not only difference in age between these two artists, there was difference in experience; Damia had been singing for more than twenty years then, whereas Piaf was making her first steps in the "industry". Damia seems to have gained a distance in her renditions, still dramatic; Edith's experience was troubled youth which enhanced imagination as it often happens with most of great artists at the beginning of their path.

Si la grande carrière de Damia s'est arrêtée pendant la guerre, elle chantera donc jusqu'en 1956 et décèdera en janvier 1978.

Damia is a monument in the world of the French 'chanson réaliste', very popular in het first half of the 20th century... Among her biggest hits were "L'étranger", "Sombre dimanche", "La mauvaise prière"...etc.
Here she presents her version of Zarah Leander's monster hit "Der Wind hat mir ein Lied erzählt", recorded in 1939. It is a dramatically different version. Leander's version maintains its exotic tone whereas Damia takes us to a much darker, colder place...

Cette chanson a été interdite à Budapest en raison de l'impact tragique du texte sur des gens fragiles, des suicides avaient été enregistrés. Paradoxalement, à l'époque, cette chanson était la préférée des japonais.

Une voix envoûtante, et les splendides images en n&b collant parfaitement avec.
Contrairement à Fréhel qui chantait "avec ses tripes" son propre malheur, la "tragédienne de la chanson" (1892-1978) était en fait dans la réalité une grande dame plutôt gaie et enjouée. Elle arrête pratiquement de chanter
à la fin de la guerre, mais fera toujours des apparitions publiques jusqu'en 1970.
