O património imaterial representa a fonte vital de uma identidade profundamente enraizada na História e compreende "o conjunto de formas da cultura tradicional e popular ou folclórica, quer dizer, as obras colectivas que emanam de uma cultura e se baseiam na tradição. Estas tradições transmitem-se oralmente ou mediante gestos e modificam-se com o decorrer do tempo através de um processo de recreação colectiva. Incluem-se nelas as tradições orais, os costumes, as línguas, a música, os bailes, os rituais, as festas, a medicina tradicional e a farmacêutica, as artes culinárias e todas as habilidades especiais relacionadas com os aspectos materiais da cultura, tais como as ferramentas e o habitat."
A índole efémera deste património intangível torna-o vulnerável. A salvaguarda deste património deve partir da iniciativa individual e reciber o apoio das associações, especialistas e instituições.
