Cliff teamed up with drummer Terry Smart and guitarist Ken Payne to form the Drifters, who worked their way up on the club circuit until they were playing at London's famous 21's coffee bar. While performing they were seen by guitarist Ian Samwell, who then joined the group. With his musicians providing a Ventures-like background, Richard continued to develop his rocking style and grow in popularity.
In 1958 Cliff and the Drifters attracted the attention of theatrical agent George Ganyou while performing at a Saturday morning talent show at Gaumont cinema in Shepherd's Bush, London. Ganyou approached them about making a demo, then paid for their recording of "Breathless" and "Lawdy Miss Clawdy." Norrie Paramour, a producer at EMI, gave the group an audition after hearing the demo. He immediately saw Richard's obvious "Elvis-like" appeal and wanted to sign him up as a solo act who would be backed up by an orchestra. Richard insisted on retaining his band members, and the producer agreed to bring the Drifters on board as well.

On April 9, 1972, in Hampton Roads, Virginia, this song was used in the documentary Elvis On Tour. Elvis, in Dr. John Carpenter paper in Change of Habit, played a part of Lawdy Miss Clawdy to the piano. Writing and recorded by Lloyd Price in 1952.

"Lawdy Miss Clawdy" is a song by Lloyd Price. It was first recorded by Price at the New Orleans recording studio of Specialty Records in March of 1952. It was released under the Specialty label in April and was number one on the Billboard rhythm and blues chart for seven weeks and stayed on the chart for six months. An 8-bar blues with a rolicking piano backup, with the words written by Price, but the melody adapted from the older Junker Blues (Champion Jack Dupree, 1941), it became the biggest rhythm and blues hit of the year and sold over one million copies by crossing over to the white record-buying market. It was the first hit from New Orleans to be accepted into rock and roll.The word lawdy means lord.
