John's next big move is the creation of an advertising "exchange" between quality bloggers like BoingBoing and Digg and national brand advertisers including General Motors and Microsoft. The new company is called Federated Media and they have quietly signed nearly 100 blogs. Here's an interesting piece by Matthew Creamer in Advertising Age.
We caught up with Federated's VP Chas Edwards in New York last week. The Sausalito-based company is expanding its presence in New York with Bill Brazell, a former Standard editor who is busy finding cool blogs to pull into the federation.

An aerial tour of the OSU campus, the country's largest university by enrollment. The helicopter tour begins east of the campus. It approaches the campus from the east and shows Route23/High Street (running north to south) where the main entrance to the school is located. Next is the view (from east to west) along Lane Avenue and Woody Hays Drive, which includes an artistic new bridge. To the south is the large, horseshoe-shaped OSU stadium. To the north of the stadium are St. John's Arena, the Woody Hays Athletic Center, the Schottenstein Center, and the Fawcett Center for Tomorrow. Off campus, sights shown include the Chemical Abstracts center and the Jack Nicklaus Museum.
Just south of the stadium (shown in close-up) are the tall twin Lincoln and Morrill tower buildings. To the east of the stadium are the smoke stacks of the university power plant and various classroom buildings. The white roof of the Wexner Center for the Arts-Mershon Complex can be seen under the helicopter-landing pod (it is north of the former Ohio Historical Society Museum). Behind this is the oval (green open area criss-crossed with walkways). At the far end of the Oval is the tall William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library.
South of the Oval and of he Stadium are the OSU Hospital complex, including the James Comprehensive Cancer Center, James Hospital, athletic fields where the football team practices, and the tall OSU dormitories (foreground). Off campus to the south is the huge Battelle Memorial Institute complex. Behind this is the Olentangy River. The Columbus skyline is visible as the helicopter turns. Traveling back to the north, the Biological Science building is visible south of the twin Lincoln and Morrill towers. The dug-up lot is site of the former Ohio Union, once considered the greatest student union (it was demolished this year and another is to be built). North of it is a parking building, the old Ohio Historical Society Museum (now the Sullivant Hall library), and the Wexner Center for the Arts-Mershon Auditorium. Toward the end of the video is the unique Ohio Historical Society Museum building, which is a square building setting on a stalk.
OSU is the nation's largest university. Well known OSU landmarks include: OSU Stadium- "The Horseshoe," Orton Hall, Wexner Center for the Arts, Mirror Lake, The Oval, William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library, Fawcett Center for Tomorrow, University Hospital complex, Union, Don Scott Field, OSU Golf Course, WOSU radio station, Buckeye TV, Lantern, Student Newspaper, Scott Laboratory for Mechanical Engineering, University Hall, and the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. Chadwick Arboretum, Mershon, Woody Hays Athletic Center, Schottenstein Center, and St. John Arena.
Prominent off campus sites include: the telescope on Mount Graham in Arizona, former "Big Ear Telescope" for SETI, Stone Laboratory, and Byrd Polar Research Center. Associated sites that are visible in the video include the Olentangy River and 6th Avenue Bridge, Chemical Abstracts, Battelle Memorial Institute, Lane Avenue Bridge, Jack Nicklaus Museum, and Ohio Historical Center.

Here's my second interview with Chas Edwards, VP at Federated Media, the new company started by John Battelle that links advertisers with bloggers and community sites.
Lots of vloggers are trying to figure out a viable ad model. Robert Scoble has been wondering about this topic this week and his musings have spawned scores of comments on his blog, including one from me.
Chas says the ad model is still being sorted out and he's not sure about the post roll/pre-roll video insertion issue quite yet.
What he does like is the "custom" ads being created for individual marketers by Rocketboom -- these are in the form of post roll ads. However, while these ad are effective for one site, Chas says that they are not necessarily "scalable" for use on other sites.
Well, I think Rocketboom has it right: niche publishing can thrive with relevant advertisers. I agree with Blip.TV's Mike Hudack who told me back in June that this period is like the "golden age" of television, where advertising was secured by a sole show sponsor. These brands did very well as sponsors back in the day: Geritol, Alcoa, Lucky Strikes, etc. I wonder which will be the brands to succeed with using online video?????

| | O'HARE -- LIKE UFO SIGHTING - 313 sec
As in the November 7, 2006 O'Hare sighting, this object was rotating and over an airport. The observation occurred around 4 P.M. on February 23, 1984 over Hamilton Hall on the Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio. When the first witness, W1, sighted the object, from a stairwell under an east-facing window, it looked, in general, like a flying, rotating rectangle. Part of the time it had a bright light under it. It moved slowly, was on the flight path of Port Columbus Airport, and a low jet appeared to pass under it as W1 watched. W1 went to the department office and collected 4 other witnesses.
In general, it looked like a rectangle, which would disappear and then come back into view. During part of the observation, a much smaller, but very bright white light was under the rectangle. The object rotated at precise regular intervals of about once a minute. It didn't just twist randomly in the wind.
The witnesses watched it for approximately 20-25 minutes as, it slowly drifted toward Port Columbus airport. The witnesses asked if there were a telescope or camera in the building, but were unable to find one. By around 4:20, a witness called Warren Nicholson, who worked at the nearby Battelle Memorial Institute and who investigates UFO sightings. By this time, the object was nearly out of sight. Mr. Nicholson called back to say that he had looked for it from the roof of the main Battelle building, but had been unable to see it. He later said that he had checked with Port Columbus immediately and they told him the wind velocity was 0. They couldn't see it on radar.
Mr. Nicholson later said that that evening a family had also made a UFO report describing it as four lines in the sky. The father had taken pictures through a 1200 power telephoto lens with ASA 400 color film. The wife described the lines as tear drop shaped and the husband described each as shaped like an airplane's wing section. They were visible in the west and were dark. They then flew away in four different directions. Mr. Nicholson said the witnesses were very credible. He thought that many sightings in one day were a 'flurry' of activity.
So far, the object has never been identified. One characteristic noted by all witnesses was its regular rotation and rectangular appearance. No balloon shape was seen. It would be quite difficult for a balloon to continually rotate regularly, because wind currents would prevent this. The rotation was very regular, not a twisting in the wind (and there was no wind). In addition, there would need to be some sort of power plant and a method of propulsion to allow it to maintain its rotation.
As in the O'Hare observation, all witness was credible. All now have Ph.D.s and have been or are university professors. The reports were collected from each individual witness independently on or within a few days of the sighting and sent to the CUFOS. No one had any idea what the object was. Because of the lack of wind and the overhead power lines the witnesses were sure it wasn't a kite. A daytime sighting of a rotating object is very rare. The observation was reported in several books.
The O'Hare sighting, which took place at 4:30 at Chicago O'Hare International Airport, was witnesses by at least 12 airport employees. It was described as a spinning metallic object and visible for about 2 minutes. It then suddenly accelerated straight up through the clouds and left an open hole of clear air in the clouds. It was reported that a pilot with a digital camera might have photographed it. Both United Airlines and the FAA first denied any knowledge of the sighting. The Chicago Tribune filed an FOIA request and uncovered information about it. Jon Hilkevitch investigated and reported the information and it became the most read story in the history of chicagotribune.com with almost a million hits.
Such events are just as mysterious as the possible Roswell event and the recent disappearance of a celebrity, such as Steve Fossett a celebrity, who set many aviation records and was noted for his daring but also ability to survive catastrophe. A pilot friend from the area told me that he knew the territory around Barron Hilton's place very well. He learned to fly and got his private pilot's license flying out of Reno/Stead airport, 10 miles north of Reno proper. He thought it possible that his small plane (an acrobatic two seater) could have crashed in rugged terrain where it is difficult to see, but he found it amazing that any wreckage has not been found by now. Fossett's emergency transmitter should have begun transmitting if there ware a crash, unless it were broken (they are tested regularly) or disabled (Fossett could do this).
REGARDLESS OF WHAT THE OBJECTS ARE, REPORTS OF ANY OBJECT OVER AN AIRPORT SHOULD BE TAKEN SERIOUSLY. EVEN A GOOSE CAN CAUSE AN AIRPLANE CRASH.
