Este grupo tuvo origen en La Cueva por iniciativa de Miguel Abuelo y Pipo Lernoud. En realidad, recorrieron el camino inverso que cualquiera de las bandas de la época.
Abuelo acompañó a Lernoud a la compañía discográfica y, repentinamente, el manager le preguntó si él también tenía su grupo. Ahí nomás, Abuelo inventó el nombre y acordó grabar a los tres meses. Debió, entonces, encontrar los músicos que lo secundaran.
El guitarrista Claudio Gabis no aceptó unirse a Los Abuelos porque ya estaba ensayando con Manal, pero sí accedió a grabar con ellos. Luego entraría Norberto Pappo Napolitano como guitarrista estable.
Esa primera formación quedaría integrada, entonces, con Miguel Abuelo (voz), Héctor "Pomo" Lorenzo (batería), Alberto Lara (bajo), Micky Lara (guitarra), Eduardo "Mayoneso" Fanacoa (teclados) y Pappo (guitarra).
El simple que lograron grabar incluía "Diana Divaga" y "Tema en flu sobre el planeta", pero el disco no se editó, sino que solamente tuvo alguna pobre difusión en radios. A los pocos meses, por "diferencias musicales", la agrupación decide disolverse. Abuelo se radicó en España y Pappo continuó un tiempo al frente del grupo, con una inclinación más hacia el blues.
Junto a Cachorro Lopez, Miguel Abuelo regresa a la Argentina en 1979 y comienza la segunda etapa de Los Abuelos. Graban unos demos en 1981 y consiguen muchísima difusión en las radios. Editan "Guindilla ardiente" y "Mundos in mundos", dos simples.
Sin dudas hay que remarcar la presencia de Andrés Calamaro en la banda, por entonces casi un adolescente que estaba a punto de formar una banda con Zeta Bosio cuando lo llamó Abuelo. Calamaro arrimó el sonido del grupo hacia el pop y el new wave de los 80, y compuso y cantó los que tal vez sean los dos éxitos más importantes del grupo: "Sin Gamulán" y "Mil Horas".
El primer álbum ("Los Abuelos de la Nada", 1982) fue producido por Charly García, mientras éste componía Pubis Angelical. Contenía hits que se convertirían en clásicos: "Sin gamulán" y "No te enamores nunca de aquel marinero bengalí". El mismo García apadrinó el show presentación en el teatro Coliseo, en el cual tuvieron tanto éxito que los animó a iniciar una gira por el interior, que no pararía hasta fines de ese mismo año. La amistad de la banda con Charly terminaría por dar grandes resultados: los invitó a participar, como grupo soporte, de su presentación en Ferro, en diciembre de 1982, junto a Suéter.
El primer Obras llegó en junio del '83, donde adelantaron material: "Espía de Dios", "No se desesperen" y "Sor Teresa". Estos temas se incluirían en la segunda placa, "Vasos y Besos", que se editaría a fines de ese año. El crecimiento de la banda quedaría demostrado con el show en el estadio de Velez, "descorchando el '84 con Vasos y Besos", sólo un diciembre después de la invitación de García a telonearlo.
El tercer disco, "Himno de mi corazón" (1984) fue presentado en el Teatro Coliseo, en diciembre. Sin Melingo ni Bazterrica y con Afredo Desiata y Gringui Herrera en reemplazo, registraron los conciertos del Teatro Opera para sacar un disco en vivo.
En noviembre de 1985 se presentaron en el Festival Buenos Aires Rock & Pop, junto a Charly García, Nina Hagen, INXS y Fito Páez. El show sufrió muchos problemas de organización, lluvia torrencial e inoportunos cortes de luz. En el campo de juego, la violencia entre el público se incrementaba por las demoras. Miguel Abuelo cerró el show entonando "Himno de mi corazón", con la cara ensangrentada por un botellazo que había recibido.
Para el último trabajo discográfico de Los Abuelos ("Cosas mías", 1986) ya la banda era distinta: Abuelo (voz), Kubero Díaz (guitarra), Juan Del Barrio (teclados), Marcelo Fogo (bajo) y Polo Corbella (batería).
Con esta formación brindaron varios recitales, pero la convocatoria había descendido considerablemente. La agrupación se disolvió definitivamente a fines del '86. Miguel Abuelo murió de sida el 26 de marzo de 1988.
Cachorro López editó dos recopilaciones (en 1994 y 1995) con remasterizaciones y una versión bailable de "Marinero Bengalí".
