| VLF Aeriology - Joyce Hinterding - 225 sec This clip is taken from ep 5 of Subsonics
Joyce Hinterding is a cross media artist living and working in Sydney who focuses on a form of work concerned with energy and sound. At the heart of her work is the exploration of the seemingly invisible phenomena that pervade our very existence: electricity, the sounds of weather or electro-magnetic fields.
Consistent throughout her oeuvre has been the desire to make the invisible visible.

The content of the interview relates to recordings of (usually VLF band) electromagnetic (radio) noise produced by live mains electricity, electric storms, the sun, VLF "whistlers", domestic appliances, IT technology, industrial and transport hardware, railway and metro systems etc, produced by Disinformation and released (by the record company Ash International) on CD and LP between 1996 and 1999 - described here as "a really Sci-Fi form of wildlife recording". The film features an extract from "National Grid" remixed by Bruce Gilbert from Wire (from the "Antiphony" double CD published in 1997), with pylon footage by Barry Hale... "strangely comforting"!
The demonstration given in this film - of using a VLF loop antenna to listen to magnetic fields produced by (in this case) computer / TV monitors and live mains electricity, is very similar to that given at the Disinformation lecture at London's Lux Cinema on 9 December 1998 (on the same bill as Robin Rimbaud / Scanner, in an event organised by The Wire magazine), and to that given in Joyce Hinterding's "Subsonics" video "VLF Aeriology" (which can also be seen on You Tube) produced by Oren Ambarchi in 2003. These ideas were also "rediscovered" (lock, stock and barrel) by artists like Honor Harger and Christina Kubisch (a university Professor who claims, entirely falsely, to be one of "the first generation of sound artists").
The CD mentioned towards the end of the clip was released as "Sense Data and Perception", and the exhibit referred to was "Artificial Lightning" (later retitled "The Origin of Painting") - seen by 36,000 people in "Sonic Boom" at London's Hayward Gallery, and described by Sian Ede (Arts Director of The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation) as "way and ahead the best piece in Sonic Boom". Disinformation's VLF work was most recently exhibited in the "4:33" exhibition at Kunstverein Bregenz, Austria in July 2007, see http://www.bregenzerkunstverein.at/english/m4_4_33.htm + http://www.ashinternational.com/html/reviews/disinformation.html

The "National Grid" sound installation is a very primitive musical composition, created by performing simple rhythmic transformations to amplified noise from an ambient electromagnetic VLF field or mains transformer. The style of transformation is similar to a technique pioneered by the 18th century composer Guiseppe Tartini. Once activated, the system performs indefinitely (the longest version so far having performed continuously for 6 weeks). Standing waves produced by the interaction between this sound installation and the architectural acoustics of its own exhibition space enable audiences to "play" the "instrument" by moving around within the (peaks and troughs of the) three-dimensional sound mass. The result is an experience that is intrinsically unique to each participant. The video camera records these effects (and audience interactions) for those who weren't able to experience them live. Disinformation's "National Grid" was first published and performed in 1996, and first exhibited at London's (now closed) Museum of Installation gallery in 1997, with the opening night being attended by Auto-Destructive Art pioneer and veteran anti-nuclear activist Gustav Metzger. Hari is the journalist and author most famous for receiving a £1.25 million advance for his novel "The Impressionist", and for telling the Daily Mail newspaper where to shove it on their attitude to immigration. However the main purpose of uploading this clip is to document the connection between Disinformation's work with Sound Mirrors, to themes that Hari and DJ group Coldcut explored in their BBC radio play "Sound Mirrors", as followed by Coldcut's own (equally imaginatively entitled) project "Sound Mirrors". Disinformation Sound Mirror images also appear on page 59 of the 2001 Sonar Festival catalogue, while Coldcut's contribution appears on page 63 of that same catalogue, so there's no question that Coldcut knew about Disinformation's work as well.

The programme discussed simple strategies that can be applied by tinnitus sufferers to ameliorate the sleep loss which in practice is often the worst symptom of their condition. The interview recommends that people who experience sleep loss owing to tinnitus mask the ringing in their ears by playing very quiet and gentle radio static when they go to sleep at night, but the specific type of static best used is pure "white" noise, or the clean continuous hissing sound which can be found on some "quiet" FM radio frequencies. Further advice can be obtained from The British Tinnitus Association at...

The tinnitus simulation that appears 19 seconds and also 3 minutes 20 seconds into this sequence could indeed be heard on the radio broadcast, but, even with headphones, is virtually inaudible after compression for You Tube.
The interview discussed other aspects of nocturnal listening - the influence that the SOUND of RAF Lyneham air base in Wiltshire (home of the Herluses C130 transporter planes) has on the imagery of the Disinformation sound art project, particularly on "National Grid" by Disinformation. RAF Lyneham is described as "one of the most musical RAF bases"...

"London Underground" was recorded on the platform at Clapham South Underground Station in 2002, but remained unpublished until released on Disinformation's "Sense Data and Perception" CD, put out by the record company Iris Light in 2005. "Sense Data and Perception" also included "Bexleyheath to Dartford" - a track recorded travelling through Lewisham railway station. "London Underground" is based on a conceptual and technical precedent established by "R&D Track 10" on Disinformation's "R&D2" CD, published by Ash International in 1997, which featured magnetic field recordings of Network South East and Eurostar trains. Writing in The Wire magazine, reviewer Keith Moline described these Disinformation tracks as being "fascinating" and as "like electron microscope images". Conceptually there is a play on words, as "London Underground" refers to both a transport network and to a cultural and social phenomenon.
The full version of "Bexleyheath to Dartford" appears on the "Radio Territories" CD published to accompany the book (of the same name) edited by Erik Granly Jensen and Brandon LaBelle (Errant Bodies Press 2007). The book also contains a bio of Disinformation and a description of this project. "Bexleyheath to Dartford" is credited as appearing on the CD published with volume 10 issue 2 of the LMC's "Resonance" magazine (London Musicians Collective 2005), but in fact there was a mix up with the information and the track on the LMC CD is instead "London Underground". The magazine also features a 5 page article about Disinformation's work with radio and electricity. The LMC CD also features material by Susan Alcorn, P Sing Cho, John Butcher, Sylvia Hallett, Matt Wand, John Tilbury and Franz Joseph Haydn.
These Disinformation tracks were formally submitted to London Underground Ltd's "Platform for Art" programme in January 2005, but remained unexhibited until they were set-up as sound installations at Event gallery, March 2006 (as part of the Node:London exhibition). Special thanks to Adam Sykes, Colm Lally, Chloe Vaitsu and Caroline Kraabel.

Special thanks to Minoru Hatanaka. The tracks heard in this mix are "London's Overthrow" by Evan Parker and Disinformation (from the "Al Jabr" CD), "R&D Track 3" (LORAN-C radionavigation signals), a VLF radio recording of electromagnetic noise induced by a Dataproducts laserprinter, accompanied live by square waves from 2 laboratory tone generators found in a skip (dumpster) outside London's South Bank University.
As befits an art gallery sponsored by the Japanese telephone company, the PA for this event was of incredible power and quality (the sub-bass alone was quadraphonic surround sound). The PA signal was recorded direct to video, so the sound here is clean, but barely conveys the true nature of the perceived experience, ie - Brian Duguid wrote in EST magazine that some of the sounds recorded by Disinformation "make you wonder why Merzbow even bother". The video was filmed over the heads of the (seated) audience. According to Minoru, the vibrations rattled glass cabinets all over the museum and brought down ceiling panels in the auditorium. The brand of lager was (I think) Kirin. After the NTT ICC show Philip Jeck, Joe Banks, Mike Harding and saxophonist Rees Archibald performed at The Metro, Kyoto, at the invitation of composer Koji Marutani (of Digital Narcis Records). A very similar performance to the Disinformation vs Evan Parker track was performed at The Dom Moscow (28 Sept 2000) with Mike Walter and Andy Knight on saxophones, and with YBA artist Gavin Turk and Pete Doherty (of The Libertines and The Babyshambles) in the audience.
The NTT ICC events also featured work by Ryoji Ikeda, Marc Behrens, Christoph Charles, Jane Dowe, Max Eastley, Peter Hagdahl, CM von Hausswolff, Phillip Jeck, Brandon LaBelle, Pol Mahlow, Mesmer, Ikue Mori, Carsten Nicolai, Atsushi Sasaki, Minoru Sato, Jio Shimizu, Terre Thaemlitz, David Toop, Toshiya Tsunoda, Satoru Wono and the WrK label.
Some time after this event, Disinformation also contributed to a (separate) CD project called "C4i". In 2007 lawyers acting for fellow "Phase of Post Music" contributor Ryoji Ikeda threatened to sue Disinformation for "defamation" for the crime of pointing out (to an employee of London's Barbican Centre) a rather obvious conceptual similarity between the original "C4i" project and Ryoji's later project "C4i" (commissioned by Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media - YCAM, in Japan, with its touring funded by the Japan Foundation). The record company that released the original "C4i" CD - Staalplaat, is the same company that released Ryoji's "Time and Space" and "Mort Aux Vaches" CDs, Ryoji's lawyer argued that the 2 "C4i" projects could not be related however, because Ryoji's title was an acronym for the term "Command, Control, Communications, Computing and Intelligence" - a term which happens to be a direct quote from the front cover of the original "C4i" CD !

Art / noise group Disinformation first recorded VLF whistlers near Brighton in 1995. These were released on the "Ghost Shells" 12" EP by the record company Ash International in 1996. Further recordings of the same (and many related) phenomena were released on the Disinformation "R&D" and "R&D2" (Research and Development) CDs in 1996 and 1997.
The Disinformation recordings were originally inspired by the Channel 4 TV documentary "Electric Skies", by Joe J. Carr's articles on "Radioscience Observation" in Shortwave Magazine, and then came about as an offshoot of its author's participation in the Istochnik-Ariel "virtual" laser antenna experiment on board Space Station MIR, which was organised by the American amateur science group INSPIRE (Interactive NASA Space Physics Ionosphere Radio Experiments) in association with NASA and the Russian space agency IKI.
These VLF whistler recordings have been used in dozens of Disinformation concerts and DJ sets, and have been exhibited as sound installations in an Ikon Gallery UK touring exhibition called "Kiss The Sky", at Art™ (Art.TM) Inverness, in the Sonar festival at CCCB Barcelona, at Hull Time Based Arts, and most recently at Kunstverein Bregenz, Austria, etc. These recordings were also edited down to create the (0.83 second long) "Theophany" sound installation, aka "The Voice of God", a parody of the work of the same name by composer John Tavener, which has been exhibited in over a dozen galleries, including Fabrica in Brighton, Burghley House Sculpture Garden and London's Victoria and Albert Museum. "Ghost Shells" features in the forthcoming "Wet Sounds" UK touring exhibition http://www.newtoy.org/wetsounds.html
"Ghost Shells" was remixed by composer John Wall on his CD "Fractuur". "Ghost Shells" sounds appear in Disinformation remixes by musicians Mark van Hoen, RLW (Ralf Wehowsky), LOSD, Mark Van Hoen, SETI (Andrew Lagowski), Zbigniew Karkowski & Marc Behrens, Atom Heart and Kapotte Muziek, which appear on the "Antiphony" 2xCD, while remixes by Mechos and T:un[k] Systems (both pseudonyms of Peter Hodgkinson) appear on the "Al Jabr" CD compilation. Very similar ideas were "rediscovered" by The Kronos Quartet in 2002. "Ghost Shells" recently featured on the BBC Radio 4 programme "Broadcasting House".
The first public demonstrations of what we now refer to as VLF phenomena were presented by the Victorian electrical engineer William Preece, while the critic and art historian Douglas Kahn maintains that the first person to ever hear these phenomena was the inventor Alexander Graham Bell's assistant Thomas Watson. However, as documented in the original "Ghost Shells" sleevenotes, specific study of VLF whistlers goes back to investigations conducted during WW1 by the German physicist Heinrich Barkhausen. Special thanks to Mike Harding for publishing the original recordings.
