| U.S. Child Labor, 1908-1920 - 561 sec A look at child labor in the early 20th century in the United States as represented through the photography of Lewis W. Hine. The film documents the use of child labor in industry, including the exploitation of children and the lower classes in American society. Many of the jobs were extremely dangerous and numerous children and adults were injured or killed in the attempt to advance in society. The viewer must understand the context of the situation at the time and think of the individuals from the perspective that it could be one of their ancestors, in order to fully grasp the emotion of the video. | Der Golem (1920) with new original soundtrack - 269 sec The classic 1920 German expressionist black and white horror film "The Golem" gets a new soundtrack by Hollywood composer Carvin Knowles in this original JewishJournal.com video
Carvin Knowles writes:
In the 16th Century CE Rabbi Judah Loew was said to have created a powerful Golem to defend Prague's Jewish ghetto.
Although I composed this segment of of score for the scene in Paul Wegener's 1920 prequel to his silent Golem series in the summer of 2002, I only recorded it during the last weekend of October in 2007.
I played all the brass and woodwinds myself, including the oboe solo near the beginning and the gong, all in my small Hollywood apartment.
In this scene, Rabbi Loew summons the Sumerian demon Astaroth to learn the word that will bring the Golem to life -- rendered in the most arcane transliteration from Hebrew that I have ever seen, the word is "Aemath" meaning 'emet' (Hebrew)' or 'truth.' I had imagined Rabbi Loew reciting the Shema to hold the ancient demon at bay.
For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by Der Golem, the great Jewish monster of clay who only comes to life when Truth is in his breast (or on his tongue, in the original text).
Whether it is the silent film or the Hammer horror version or even Mozart's "Don Giovanni" (which, incidentally, had it's premier in Prague), the living statue has always terrified and thrilled me.
It is my pleasure to share a little piece of that with our audiences at JewishJournal.com.
Enjoy

| Paul Whiteman - Japanese Sandman 1920/1928 - 367 sec In 1920, Paul Whiteman and his Orch. made a recording of Whispering and The Japanese Sandman. It was enormously successful and catapulted Whiteman to national stardom. The records are not jazz, but are jazzy. Whiteman smoothed the rough edges off jazz thus making it more palatable for the masses. Of course, now he is heavily criticized for this (Whiteman did sometimes play music that was true jazz). He was called the King of Jazz but more appropriately he should be called King of the Jazz Age. Anyway, here is the 1920 record of Japanese Sandman followed by Whiteman's 1928 electrical recording of the same tune. What a dramatic difference in just 6 years. A much more sophisticated arrangement. Of the 20th century, the 1920's was the decade of most rapid change: radio, electrical recording, talking pictures, television, art, music, cars, fashion, architecture, appliances, etc. Auteur : merrihew Tags: Whiteman 1920's Victor Orthophonic |

| Igor Stravinsky: Symphonies Of Wind Instruments (1920) - 599 sec Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Reinbert De Leeuw, conductor
Igor Stravinsky's "Symphonies of Wind for Instruments", a piece he composed in 1920 in memory of Claude Debussy. It is the last major work in his characteristic Russian style.
He had just moved his family from Biarritz to Brittany, but spent much time in Paris composing. Gabrille Chanel let him use her house in the suburbs, and the Pleyel company let him use a studio in their piano warehouse.
the famed conductor Serge Koussevitzky conducted one of the first performances of "Symphonies", rather disasterously, and Stravinsky later said "Koussevitzky executed the work, in firing-squad fashion".

| Oldest Pro Wrestling on Film: Caddock vs Stecher, 1920 - 1550 sec Rare footage from the second Earl Caddock-Joe Stecher match for the professional wrestling world title, January 30th 1920. The match took place at the second Madison Square Garden in New York City. Stecher pinned Caddock in 2:05:00 using a wristlock and his finishing hold, the body scissors.
This is perhaps the earliest professional wrestling match of which film survives. Some have said that Caddock-Stecher was the last great "shoot" (real) match for a world title, but others argue that this style was simply a more traditional way of "working" (performing) than what would soon follow. While it is impossible to determine when professional wrestling became purely performance, clearly by this point in its history match outcomes were largely predetermined. In the coming months, "Toots" Mondt and Billy Sandow would reshape the sport into a style of performance virtually identical to what we know today.
