EAST ST LOUIS TOODLE-OO (1974) by Steely Dan - 181 sec East St Louis Toodle-oo was a Duke Ellington number and was the first and last cover on a Steely Dan album (in this case, Pretzel Logic, released October 1974).
Walter Becker's wah-wah guitar (he also played bass on the session) simulated the original's muted trumpet. According to Becker, the piano solo was a composite of four clarinet solos off versions of the tune. Tricky Sam Nanton's trombone was adapted brilliantly by Jeff Baxter on, of all things, pedal steel guitar. Donald Fagen also played saxophone for the only time on the original Steely Dan albums. Also helping out were Jim Gordon on drums, Dean Parks on banjo, and Roger Nicholls banging the gong at the end.
As there is no clip available for this tune, I have made my own, attempting to simulate what it must have been like to see the Dan play this old jazz instrumental. My tribute to the Dan and the Duke.
