The haunting melody of the Kol Nidre prayer, traditionally sang at Yom Yippur; played here on an actual replica of King David's Lyre!
The replica lyre I am playing, is based on illustrations found on ancient Jewish coins from the time of the Bar Kochba revolt against the Romans - photos of this type of coin can be seen, literally all over my Youtube Channel Page!
The Kinnor Lyre was played by King David, 3000 years ago, when he danced before the Ark of the Covenant, & for over 1000 years, it's mystical resonance could be heard wafting through the Olive Groves from Temple Mount, where it was played by my own Levite ancestors in the Temple of Jerusalem, to accompany the legendary singing of the Levitical Choir...
After almost 2000 years of silence, following the destruction of the Jewish Temple in 70CE by the Roman Legions under Titus, the haunting sound of the ancient Jewish Kinnor can be heard once more...in my spare room, Salford, Lancashire!!;o)
The transliteration/translation of this prayer from the Hebrew is as follows:
va'chara-may, v'konah-may,
U'knah-say, v'chee-nu-yay, Dindahr-nah,
U'dish-tvahnah u'dah-harimnah,
U'dah-sarnah ahl nahf-shatanah.
Me-Yom Kippurim zeh ad
Yom Kippurim haba ah-leynu l'tovah.
B'chul-hone Eech-raht-nah-b'hone,
Kuhl-hone, y'hone, sharahz, Shvee-kin,
Shvee-tin, B'taylin u'mvoo-tah-lin.
Lah sh'ririn v'lah kah-yahmin,
Nidrah-nah lah nidray,
V'ehs-rahnah lah eh-sahray,
U'shvu-ahtahnah lah shvuot.
"All vows, obligations, oaths, anathemas,
be they called konam or konas,
or by any other name,
which we may vow or pledge.....
From this Day of Atonement
until the next.....we do repent.
May they be deemed to be forgiven,
absolved, anulled or void,
and made of no effect.
They shall not bind us not have power over
us, and the vows shall not be considered
vows, nor the obligations obligatory,
nor the oaths."
This prayer has been misinterpreted and misquoted by raving antisemites throughout the ages - who quote it completely out of context, & use it as an "argument" that no Jew is ever to be trusted!
Rabbis have always pointed out that the dispensation from vows in Kol Nidrei refers ONLY to those which an individual voluntarily assumes for himself alone between himself and God, and in which no other persons or their interests are involved. The formula is restricted to ONLY those vows which are made solely between man and God alone; they have NO effect on vows made between one man and another. No vow, promise, or oath which concerns another person, a court of justice, or a community is, or was ever meant to be implied in Kol Nidrei!
According to Jewish doctrine, the sole purpose of this prayer, is to give protection from divine punishment in case of violation of a vow, made solely between man and God...
