Victor Jara and the Blops - Progressive Chile 1971 - 506 sec
1) "El derecho de vivir en paz"/The right to live in peace (Víctor Jara) 2) "Abre la ventana"/Open your window (Víctor Jara) Victor Jara: voz y guitarra Angel Parra: tiple Eduardo Gatti: teclados y guitarra Julio Villalobos: Guitarra eléctrica Juan Pablo Orrego: Bajo Juan Contreras: Flautas, teclados. Sergio Bezard: Batería, percusión. ------------------------------------- Jara was deeply influenced by the folklore of Chile and other Latin American countries; he was particularly influenced by artists like Violeta Parra, Atahualpa Yupanqui, and the poet Pablo Neruda. Jara began his foray into folklore in the mid-1950s when he began singing with the group Cuncumen. He moved more decisively into music in the 1960s getting the opportunity to sing at Santiago's La Peña de Los Parra, owned by Ángel Parra. Through them Jara became greatly involved in the Nueva Canción movement of Latin American folk music. He published his first recording in 1966 and, by 1970, had left his theater work in favor of a career in music. His songs were drawn from a combination of traditional folk music and left-wing political activism. From this period, some of his most renowned songs are Plegaria a un Labrador ("A Worker's Prayer") and Te Recuerdo Amanda ("I Remember You Amanda"). He supported the Unidad Popular ("Popular Unity") coalition candidate Salvador Allende for the presidency of Chile, taking part in campaigning, volunteer political work, and playing free concerts. On the morning of September 12, Jara was taken, along with thousands of others, as a prisoner to the Chile Stadium (renamed the Estadio Víctor Jara in September 2003). In the hours and days that followed, many of those detained in the stadium were tortured and killed there by the military forces. Jara was repeatedly beaten and tortured; the bones in his hands were broken as were his ribs. Reports that one of Jara's hands, or both of his hands, had been cut off, are, however, erroneous.[citation needed] Fellow political prisoners have testified that his captors mockingly suggested that he play guitar for them as he lay on the ground. Defiantly, he sang part of a song supporting the Popular Unity coalition.[citation needed] After further beatings, he was machine-gunned on September 15 and his body dumped on a road on the outskirts of Santiago, and then taken to a city morgue. Jara's wife, Joan, was allowed to come and retrieve his body from the site and was able to confirm the physical damage he had endured. After holding a funeral for her husband, Joan Jara fled the country in secret. Joan Turner Jara currently lives in Chile and runs the Victor Jara Foundation. The Chile Stadium, also known as the Victor Jara Stadium, is often confused with the Estadio Nacional (National Stadium). Before his death, Victor Jara wrote a poem about the conditions of the prisoners in the stadium, the poem was written on a paper that was hidden inside a shoe of a friend. The poem was never named, but is commonly known as Estadio Chile. In June of 2008, a Chilean judge Juan Eduardo Fuentes re-opened an investigation into Victor Jara's death. Judge Fuentes said he would examine 40 new pieces of evidence provided by the singer's family. Although the military regime managed to burn the vast majority of master recordings of Jara's music, Joan Jara managed to sneak recordings out of Chile, which were later copied and distributed worldwide. Joan Jara later wrote an account of Víctor Jara's life and music, titled Víctor: An Unfinished Song. On September 22, 1973, the Soviet/Russian astronomer Nikolai Stepanovich Chernykh named a newly found asteroid 2644 Victor Jara, in honor of Victor Jara's life and artistic work. American folksinger Phil Ochs, who met and performed with Jara during a tour of South America, organized a benefit concert in New York in 1974. Titled "An Evening With Salvador Allende", the concert featured Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie and Ochs.

Argent - Counterpoints - 1976 (tracks 1, 2 & 5) - 513 sec
Eighteen months after keyboard virtuoso Rod ARGENT left the famous sixties band The ZOMBIES, their single "Time Of The Season" from their last album "Odyssey & Oracle" topped the US charts and sold one million copies! There was a hugh demand to re-group The ZOMBIES but Rod ARGENT preferred to form his own band to make more progressive music. He recruted bass player John Rodford, drummer Bob Henritt and guitarist Russ Ballard and called the quartet ARGENT. Under this name they released the eponymous debut album "Argent" in '70, the song "Liar" became a USA hit and was covered by THREE DOG NIGHT. With the next albums "Ring Of Hands" ('71) and "All Together Now" ('72) ARGENT gained more appreciation and the single "Hold Your Head Up" became a smash hit all over the world. The following album "In Deep" and single "God gave Rock 'N' To You" charted good but the increasing musical problems between Rod ARGENT and Russ Ballard finally escalated after the next album "Nexus" ('74): Russ wasn't pleased at all with Rod's synthesizer escapades, he liked the shorter and more catchy rocksongs. In '74 Russ departure was a fact but without hard feelings. Later that year ARGENT released the double-live record "Encore". Russ was replaced by multi-instrumentalist John Grimaldi and guitarist/vocalist John Verity. Rod was so excited about this new ARGENT that he refused an offer to join YES after WAKEMAN's departure! In '75 ARGENT made the album "Circus" but despite good critics the sales were poor. In '76 ARGENT released the disappointing LP "Counterpoints", ARGENT took his conclusions and broke up his band.

The Beatles - Early Progressive music, 1968 - 575 sec
The Beatles were a pop and rock group from Liverpool, England. They are one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands in the history of popular music. In the United Kingdom, The Beatles released more than 40 different singles, albums, and EPs that reached number one. This commercial success was repeated in many other countries; their record company, EMI, estimated that by 1985 they had sold over one billion records worldwide. The Beatles are the best-selling musical act of all time in the United States, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked The Beatles #1 on its list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. According to that same magazine, their innovative music and cultural impact helped define the 1960s and their influence on pop culture is still evident today. The Beatles led the mid-1960s musical "British Invasion" into the United States. Although their initial musical style was rooted in 1950s rock and roll and homegrown skiffle, the group explored genres ranging from Tin Pan Alley to psychedelic rock. Their clothes, styles, and statements made them trend-setters, while their growing social awareness saw their influence extend into the social and cultural revolutions of the 1960s.

J. S. Bach - Brandenburg Concerto No 5, Allegro No 2 - 596 sec
Johann Sebastian Bach (pronounced [joˈhan/ˈjoːhan zeˈbastjan ˈbax]) (March 21, 1685 O.S. -- July 28, 1750 N.S.) was a prolific German composer and organist whose sacred and secular works for choir, orchestra, and solo instruments drew together the strands of the Baroque period and brought it to its ultimate maturity. Although he introduced no new forms, he enriched the prevailing German style with a robust contrapuntal technique, a control of harmonic and motivic organisation from the smallest to the largest scales, and the adaptation of rhythms and textures from abroad, particularly Italy and France. Revered for their intellectual depth and technical and artistic beauty, Bach's works include the Brandenburg concertos; the Goldberg Variations; the English Suites, French Suites, Partitas, and Well-Tempered Clavier; the Mass in B Minor; the St Matthew Passion; the St. John Passion; The Musical Offering; The Art of Fugue; the Sonatas and Partitas for violin solo; the Cello Suites; more than 200 surviving cantatas; and a similar number of organ works, including the celebrated Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. While Bach's fame as an organist was great during his lifetime, he was not particularly well-known as a composer. His adherence to Baroque forms and contrapuntal style was considered "old-fashioned" by his contemporaries, especially late in his career when the musical fashion tended towards Rococo and later Classical styles. A revival of interest and performances of his music began early in the 19th century, and he is now widely considered to be one of the greatest composers in the Western tradition.

Harmonium - Depuis L'Automne - 625 sec
This Quebec-based Progressive rock band, who sang in French, has a very apt name in HARMONIUM. The core was a folk trio formed by guitarists Serge FIORI and Michel NORMANDEAU, and bassist Louis VALOIS. Their career was short (five years) and they released three studio albums in the mid-Seventies and a posthumous live album. They started off as a jazzy and typically French folk trio but began to delve into more progressive material on their brilliant second album, "Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison" ("If We Needed a Fifth Season"). They are regarded as one of the finest exponents (along with POLLEN and MANEIGE) of the "Golden Era of Quebec Progressive Music" Scene.

Vangelis - Chung Kue / The Long March - 455 sec
Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou better known as VANGELIS (the "g" is pronounced as a hard "g", as in "get") (born March 29, 1943) is a world-renowned new age and electronic musician. His best known compositions are the Academy Award-winning 1981 theme to the movie "Chariots of Fire" and the entire score to "Blade Runner". He also composed the anthem of Football World Cup 2002. Early life and work Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou was born in Volos, Greece, VANGELIS began composing when he was 4 years old, and is largely a self-taught musician. He refused to take traditional piano lessons, and throughout his career he did not have substantial knowledge of reading or writing musical notation. He studied classical music, painting and film direction at the Academy of Fine Arts in Athens. In the early 1960s he formed the pop group FORMINX (sometimes spelled "FORMYNX"), which became very popular in Greece. During the student riots in 1968 he moved to Paris and formed progressive rock band APHRODITE'S CHILD with Demis Roussos and Loukas Sideras. They had a hit single in Europe called "Rain and Tears." The group was disbanded in 1972, although Roussos made several appearances on VANGELIS' later work. Beginning of solo career VANGELIS began his solo work by writing scores to two films by French filmmaker Frederic Rossif in 1973. His first official solo album was 1974's "Earth". At about the same time, he rehearsed for a couple of weeks with another prog-rock band, YES. Although he never joined the band, he became friends with singer Jon Anderson, with whom he later worked on many occasions. After moving to London, VANGELIS signed a deal with RCA Records, set up his own studio (Nemo Studios) and began recording a string of well-regarded electronic albums. Music from the acclaimed 1975 album "Heaven and Hell" was later used as the theme to the PBS television series Cosmos. Work in film and commercial success He and Jon Anderson released several albums together in the 1980s and '90s as JON & VANGELIS. In 1982 VANGELIS won the Academy Award for Original Music Score for "Chariots of Fire". The theme song topped the US Billboard charts for one week after climbing steadily for one year. That year he also began working with director Ridley Scott; VANGELIS scored his films "Blade Runner" and "1492: Conquest of Paradise". He also scored many of the undersea documentaries of Jacques Cousteau. In 1992, France granted him the Chevalier Order of Arts and Letters. The 2001 release "Mythodea" (orchestral rather than electronic) was originally written in 1993, and was used by NASA as the theme for the Mars missions. In 2004 he released a CD soundtrack of his score for Oliver Stone's film "Alexander", continuing his involvement with projects related to his homeland.

Starcastle - To the Fire Wind (USA 1975) - 317 sec
STARCASTLE was one of the popular and well-respected bands of the American prog of the 70's. This band was known for their YES influenced epochs in the seventies. This band contained tight epic instrumentation with the somewhat dreamy and fantasy lyrics/singing of Terry Luttrell. Their singer has a Jon ANDERSON-like kind of voice, the vocal perfection beloved by American bands and an instrumental sophistication. The music was original in terms of composition lyrics and performance. They released four studio albums between 1976 and 1978. Their first two albums for Epic, "Starcastle" and "Fountains of Light", are archetypes of the symphonic sound; utopian, grand, sweeping, intricate, complex and melodic. On "Real" & "Fountains", the band changes its orientation and goes towards a direct soft rock with some YES-like vocals. "Chronos I" is a great archive work as well as some really good alternative versions to their known work.

Rick Wakeman - Statue of Justice - 384 sec
Rick WAKEMAN is one of the best known progressive musicians and a pioneer in the use of electronic keyboards in rock music. He's also been extremely prolific: in addition to his work as a member of The STRAWBS (folk-rock band), YES (progressive band), and YES offshoot Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe (ABWH), he has a huge number of session credits, including work with David Bowie, Elton John, BLACK SABBATH, Al Stewart, and Lou Reed. And he's released more solo albums than anyone this side of FRANK ZAPPA. "Statue of justice" starts with an OUTSTANDING colorful piano solo, full of mid and bass frequencies; then, all the instruments embark to produce a pleasant, melodic and complex music: organ, moog, merging piano, modern keyboards, bass and drums; it is one of the best tracks from Wakeman, and it really has the Yes sound circa the "Going for the one" album, minus the absent guitars.

Shylock - Ile De Fievre (1978) - 622 sec
With endless comparisons to King Crimson, Shylock remains one of the premier French symphonic bands. Other comparisons are made to Arachnoid and Pulsar. Darkness is the key here. Their influence can be felt in such bands as Xaal, Minimum Vital, Tiemko, and Änglagård. 1977's "Gialorgues" was recorded with the primary membership consisting of drummer André Fisichella, guitarist Frédéric l'Épée (who went on to play with Philharmonie), and keyboardist Didier Lustig. Bass player Serge Summa was added for the second album, 1978's "Ile di Fievres" (Fever Island). Their outstanding moments are shown in their more lengthy compositions. However, virtuosic musicianship was never absent.

King Crimson - One More Red Nightmare (1974) - 432 sec
For all its break-ups, periods of non-existence and fluctuating methodology, King Crimson remains one of the interminably compelling bands playing within the domain of rock music to this day. Widely acknowledged as being the harbingers of the art-rock genre with their monumental 1969 album " In The Court Of The Crimson King ", they paved the way for other innovative art-rock bands such as Yes, ELP and Genesis in the early 70s as well as providing a stimulus for more recent neo-progressive bands like Tool and The Mars Volta through their post-progressive work in the early `80s and `90s. More of a frame of mind than a style, the music of King Crimson has constantly sought out sustenance through amalgamations of existing forms of music, veering away from any contemporary mould, nullifying any notions that it is necessary to adhere to proven formulas in order to create commercially feasible music. "One More Red Nightmare" is a close contender and another excellent piece.Again there is a perfect blend of the three main members and the additional saxaphones, oboes and so forth. This song tries to expand that sound furthur and it works wonderfully. One of the most emotional parts on this song, and the whole album is when the distortion comes in at 2:05ish and is followed by a lovely drum rumble by Bill.

Renaissance - Trip To The Fair, 1975 (2006 remaster) - 628 sec
Trip To The Fair - the story goes that Annie went on a date with Roy Wood (The Move/ELO/Wizard). After a meal they decided to visit a local fair, but on arrival found it was closed. She told Betty Thatcher about it and Betty - Cornish poetess and Renaissance lyricist - wrote these lyrics, turning it into something of a nightmare as "wheels began turning I started to scream". Michael Dunford and John Tout skillfully wove an atmospheric musical picture, full of ghostly fairground rides and the sights and sounds of "voices of yesterday". Two things strike me: a pervading disharmonic tension as ethereal fairground noises swirl around us; and the jazzed-up instrumental central break with xylophone and piano alternating. Former Yardbirds members Paul Samwell-Smith, Keith Relf, and Jim McCarty organised a new group devoted to experimentation between rock, folk, and classical forms. This quintet (Relf on guitar & vocals, McCarty on drums, plus bassist Louis Cennamo, pianist John Hawken, and Relf's sister Jane Relf as an additional vocalist) released a pair of albums on Elektra (US) and Island (UK), the first one being produced by Samwell-Smith, but dissolved quickly, leaving McCarty to reform the band into a very different lineup, though McCarty also soon departed. The reconstituted lineup that was eventually settled on was the best-known of the band's history, and consisted of Annie Haslam (vocals), Michael Dunford (acoustic guitar), John Tout (piano), Jon Camp (bass/vocals) and Terence Sullivan (drums). This new Renaissance -- with Dunford in a composer-only role for the time being, and Rob Hendry (electric guitar) filling the guitarist's chair -- released Prologue in 1972 on Sovereign Records (UK). The music was written by Dunford and McCarty, with lyrics by poet Betty Thatcher. Hendry departed (to be ultimately replaced by Dunford) as the group turned away from the electric guitar in their music. In the 1970s, Renaissance had a commercially successful career, their sound similar in many ways to folk rock with classical overtones. Renaissance included in their songs quotations and allusions from such composers as Bach, Chopin, Albinoni, Debussy, Rachmaninoff, Rimsky-Korsakov, Prokofiev and others. Renaissance's records, especially Ashes Are Burning, were frequently played on American progressive rock radio stations, such as WNEW-FM, WHFS-FM,KSHE 95 and WVBR.

Van Der Graaf Generator - Still Life (live 1977) - 582 sec
If there is a band who never got worldwide recognition, but belongs on the same platform occupied by GENESIS, YES, FLOYD, GENTLE GIANT and ELP, this band is VDGG! Frontman Peter Hammill holds one of the most beautiful voices ever heard, with an infinite range of dynamics added to it, giving an odd atmosphere to the usual thoughful lyrics. Switching from sweet to aggressive moods, the vocals outstand upon a peculiar organ oriented music conducted by the geniality of Hugh Banton, yet counterpointed by beautiful saxes and other wind instruments. The band stayed innactive for a couple of years in the middle 70's but came back, maybe to deliver their best phase, with the albums "Still Life", "Godbluff", and "Quiet Zone". Some other masterpieces belong on the first period, though: The incomparable album "H to He' Who Am The Only One", which counts with the participation of the master Robert Fripp on the guitars, and also the legendary album "Pawn Hearts". Definitely a must, essential prog rock!

Guardabarranco - Tres Canciones - 611 sec
1) Corazón de Niño 2) Dale Una Luz 3) La Hoja Guardabarranco, the brother-and-sister duo of Salvador and Katia Cardenal from Nicaragua, are known for their exquisit harmonies and moving original songs. They have long been a part of the Latin American "Nueva Cancion" (New Song) movement. Their songs speak of love in all its facets and of hope for a better world. Katia and Salvador come from a family of poets, painters, writers, and musicians. During the Nicaraguan Revolution, Guardabarranco travelled to schools, factories, theaters, villages, and refugee camps, sharing their songs of gentle optimism in the face of adversity. Their poetic and original melodies were quickly recognized in their native country, Nicaragua, and also by the international "Nueva Cancion" community. As they toured the world, they have shared the stage with artists such as Silvio Rodriguez, Mercedes Sosa, Jackson Browne, Bruce Cockburn, Melissa Etheridge, Pablo Milanes, Daniel Viglietti and others. In 2001 the duo recorded for the first time in English, interpreting the song "You'll Sing To Me Too" by the legendary Pete Seeger on the second compilation of his songs by Appleseed Recordings. Their latest album, "Verdadero Pan", was released in 2003.
