About a month ago I mentioned to Lynn how much I liked Gordon's Spanish Moss - Lynn answered, you are entitled to a request or two you know , and so it is requested again it seems, once earlier by Nance - but was misplaced - my apologies to Nance.
The scenario that came to mind is that Gordon met a southern Belle while performing in Savannah Georgia. Their relationship might have been for lifetime, had things gone differently ... and, she had a daughter that Gordon called " Spanish Moss"....just a thought that works for me. Hope you enjoy it. In 1972 I had the fortune to live and work at Pond Inlet on the north side of Baffin Island from March until August. Whispers of the North brought this part of the arctic to mind. Circle of Steel, requested by crowleysridgegirl, is perhaps one of Gordon Lighfoot's most mysterious songs. Once when asked what the song meant - he replied - "it means what ever you want it to mean"...that is a whole lot to consider.
After listening to the lyrics and trying to "see" their imagery ... here is what they mean to me...and...I am continually overwhelmed by Lightfoot's imagery -
The "circle of steel" in Lightfoot's mind -might well be the prison - the walls and doors of the prison and the barbed wire (encircling steel) on top of the prison walls that keeps the father from the mother- and he child - from christmas - from home ... from experiencing New York ..in the Christmas season.
Gordon Lightfoot's mind is magnificent!
