| Fugue in A minor (by smalin) - 322 sec More about this video: I composed this four-part fugue in 1982; sheet music for this (and most of my other pieces) is available online (free) at
www.musanim.com/scores/compositions.html
This is the first video I've uploaded in high resolution (480 x 360 at 60 frames per second), and a side-effect of this is that the audio is garbled. I'll try to figure this out and get a version up that doesn't have this problem. Auteur : smalin Tags: fugue counterpoint score scrolling bar-graph player-piano Malinowski |
| Frog Round (apology) - 60 sec When I made a video of the Frog Round, I thought the poem was by Ogden Nash, and didn't know who wrote the music (I thought it was in the public domain), so I included Nash's name on the title screen and "???" for the composer of the music.
YouTube viewers liked the Frog Round, which led me to think that I might want to put it on a DVD someday, so I started trying to find the author(s), to get permission to use it.
After a couple of years, I hadn't gotten very far. I'd learned that the poem was not by Ogden Nash. One woman wrote to say she had a handwritten copy of the poem that had been given to her father (who was born in 1920) by his first grade teacher, and other wrote to say they thought it dated back to the 1800s, but I wasn't able to find anything authoritative.
Then, on March 18, 2008, Kevin (of The You Tube Team) sent me an email asking me to confirm that I "own the rights or publicity rights or have explicit permission to commercially use all video material and music, including background music, lyrics, and composition" for the Frog Round. When I told him that I didn't, he wrote back that "...because you were unable to provide proof that you do own all rights or have express permission ... we must remove this video in accordance with our copyright policies," and the video was taken down.
Since then, I've kept looking.
I thought I'd found the answer when I came across the round in the book Mastering Music, published in 1970. The lyrics were said to be "French Canadian" (presumably meaning a folk poem in the public domain), and the music was credited to Maurice Jacobson, and included with the permission of J. Curwen & Sons. I asked Aida Garcia-Cole, the Print Licensing Manager for Curwen's U.S. representative, about the copyright status of the round; she responded "I've heard back from my colleague at J. Curwen & Sons. Unfortunately, they are unable to identify this work as being controlled by J Curwen & Sons Limited. They do not appear to have any contractual documentation to support any claim for this work."
However, the answer may be contained in another piece by Maurice Jacobson, Six Descants To Popular Tunes (published in 1928). One of these is titled "The Frog (A Round)," which suggests (though it doesn't establish conclusively) that it was a popular tune at that time. That music is out of print, but a score is in the collection of British Music Information Centre, and I'm making arrangements to see a copy; hopefully, it will shed some light on the question of authorship.

| Button Shield for Roland VP-550 - 3 sec Roland made a mistake by putting the infrared sensor near buttons that control the settings; when you're waving your hand around near the sensor, it's easy to accidentally change the settings, which can be a disaster during a live performance. My button shield isn't an ideal solution (since it makes it harder to change the settings when you want to), but it is an improvement.
Three of my videos use the VP-550 for the soundtrack; look for tags with VP-550 (or VP550) in them. Auteur : smalin Tags: VP-550 VP550 roland vocoder button waving infrared expression |
| Lips Tonguelesse (2nd try) - 107 sec Poem by Robert Herrick, music and graphics by Stephen Malinowski. This version uses the "Vocoder 2" setting of the VP-550.
Here's the full text of the poem:
For my part, I never care
For those lips, that tongue-ty'd are:
Tell-tales I wo'd have them be
Of my Mistresse, and of me.
Let them prattle how that I
Sometimes freeze, and sometimes frie:
Let them tell how she doth move
Fore- or backward in her love:
Let them speak by gentle tones,
One and th'others passions:
How we watch, and seldome sleep;
How by Willowes we doe weep:
How by stealth we meet, and then
Kisse, and sigh, so part agen.
This the lips we will permit
For to tell, not publish it. Auteur : smalin Tags: VP-550 VP550 Herrick Malinowski poem Lips score scrolling music animation graphics |

Wer Suende thut, der ist vom Teufel,
Denn dieser hat sie aufgebracht.

Mit rechter Andacht widerstanden,
Hat sie sich gleich davon gemacht.
