Belle Vue BOBS roller coaster Manchester, Dec 1970 - 340 sec
Filmed in December 1970, this is almost certainly the last ever footage of the world famous Manchester Belle Vue BOBS roller coaster in action. I have referred to George Drew's excellent article on the BOBS (see link below) to establsh some of the facts for this description. The Amusement Park had closed for the season at the end of October 1970. This would be the last time that BOBS was open to the public (although this was not known at the time Belle Vue closed for the season). Shortly after this came the shock announcement that BOBS had now closed for good. So there was no opportunity for the public to even have a farewell ride. The footage filmed here (16mm mute), was a special last run in December 1970 to enable BOBS world record holder Vance Tutton (seen here drinking tea on the BOBS) to ride the BOBS for the last time. At the end of January 1971 the shocking destruction and demolition of the BOBS began, which as George Drew notes in his article, was the huge nail in the coffin which surely signalled the end of Belle Vue. And sure enough, seven years later, the end did come with the closure of Belle Vue Zoo. The Belle Vue BOBS, built in 1929, was one of the famous Fred Church designed roller coasters. Only a handful of these historic coaster rides still exist around the world today. You can read George Drew's fascinating first hand account of the Belle Vue BOBS at this site (4 pages): http://www.joylandbooks.com/themagiceye/articles/bobs1.htm ....which also contains articles, forums and links relating to historic coasters and other rides.

Radio Caroline 1964 & 65, Frinton (#3) - 486 sec
Radio Caroline in the sixties as seen by the cinema news magazines of the day. The first item is from April 1964 and features Caroline ship the Fredericia off Frinton Essex, shortly after transmissions first started, and three months before she sailed to Ramsey I.O.M and became Radio Caroline North. This item plays out with Unit Four Plus Two singing "Concrete and Clay" on the banks of the Thames, on the construction site for the new Barbican Centre. Radio Caroline North 1964 & 67, Ramsey I.O.M. (#2) - 287 sec
This is rare footage shot on board Radio Caroline North anchored in Ramsey Bay, Isle Of Man, in August 1964. The jingles I've added to the soundtrack are dubbed from vinyl - they are USA generic from 1963, issued to US radio stations on LP. The "swinging station" jingles were used by Radio Caroline North and most of the offshore stations of the sixties. This is followed by film of crowds of Caroline fans lining Ramsey harbour on 14 August 1967 to watch a moment of history, as the tender takes the incoming DJs, led by Don Allen, out to the ship. The tender then returns to Ramsey with the outgoing DJs (including Tony Prince and Dave Lee Travis, wearing black armbands), who were leaving the ship for the last time due to the impending government legislation. The Isle Of Man Parliament, the Tynwald, was opposed to the Labour government imposing the Marine Offences Act on the Island in order to outlaw Radio Caroline North. However the legislation was forced upon the Island, against their wishes, by an Order In Council. In this news clip, Charles Kerruish, Speaker of the House of Keys and Chairman of the Executive Council on the IOM, makes his views known to reporters outside the Home Office in London on 17 August 1967, after talks with the Labour government break down. From 2 August through September 2008 there will be an exhibition in the Isle Of Man celebrating Radio Caroline North. Exhibition: http://www.gov.im/mnh/information/whatson.xml Appeal: http://www.gov.im/lib/news/mnh/mnhradiocaroline.xml Other Caroline North events are planned during Aug - Sept. I will post details here as soon as I have them.

Granada closedown Aug 1987 (#5) - 152 sec
From late Sat night 22 August 1987, here is another Granada closedown sequence that I've found whilst going through some of my old tapes. Beverley Ashworth in Manchester closes down the channel at the late hour of 3.00am. And they have a few problems getting the weather slide to appear, as you will see. By this date Granada was now broadcasting late on Friday and Saturday nights, and the start of 24 hour TV at Granada (13 Feb 88) was less than 6 months away. Unfortunately this recording ends prematurely, during the closedown theme. **Many thanks to Robin Carmody for working out the exact date of this clip for me**

TV Interlude film (The White Kitten) - 1950s - 274 sec
This is a BBC TV interlude film from the 1950s - The White Kitten. There were several of these films made, such as The Potter's Wheel, The Windmill, The Spinning Wheel, Ploughing, and London to Brighton in 4 minutes. They became almost as famous as the programmes of the day. Most TV in the 1950s was live, as until the arrival of video recording in 1958, the only means of recording a programme was by film recording (telecine). So there were often gaps between programmes which needed filling, hence the Interlude films. They were also used during technical breakdowns. But they did give the viewer a chance to catch their breath between programmes. It all seems light years away from today's non-stop, in-your-face, endless self-promotion by the TV channels. More information on these Interlude films can be found at these sites: 405 Alive http://www.bvws.org.uk/405alive/info/prog_interludes.html Whirligig TV http://www.whirligig-tv.co.uk/tv/history/interludes.htm TV Ark http://www2.tv-ark.org.uk/bbccontinuity/bbc1continuity1960s.html

The Hitman and Her at Bury, 1990 (#3) - 364 sec
From June 1990, here are some more clips of The Hit Man and Her show from The Roxy in Bury. This late night TV show is hosted by Pete Waterman and Michaela Strachan. The smooch dancing is to Lonnie Gordon "Beyond Your Wildest Dreams". And the show ends with everyone dancing to the 1990 f/ball anthem "World In Motion" by England/ New Order (the 1990 World Cup Final was only a week away). Sadly this is another H&H show where the broadcast tapes have been wiped, so this is possibly an exclusive. Source: off-air VHS. Note the male dancer on the front row on stage with black t-shirt (and no cap). It's Jason Orange in his pre Take That days. In fact Clive (Wiggy) was away this week, so Jason and Neil were in charge of the dancing. Also in the line-up are regulars Stix, and Lynn & Nicki. See more from this show in parts 1 & 2.

That's Life (ducks steal the show) - June 1985 (#4) - 590 sec
From the UK TV show 'That's Life' on 16 June 1985, Esther Rantzen and her team try to save a unique children's inner city farm in Finchley London which is three weeks from closure. This is a continuation of the previous 'That's Life' upload, 'Finchley's farm'. Spike Milligan and the cubs bring the animals onto the stage and the studio descends into comedy chaos. The ducks just take over the show as the audience crease themselves with laughter and Esther pleads "Does anyone know how to catch a duck"? A wonderful moment of comedy - live television at its best! The show went out live on a Sunday evening from the TV Theatre in Shepherds Bush, London and was one of the top rated shows of its day. The team for this series was Esther Rantzen, Bill Buckley, Gavin Campbell, Michael Groth, John Gould and Maev Alexander. Source: off-air VHS from 85.

Granada closedown Sept 1986 (#4) - 422 sec
From Mon 22 Sept 1986, here is another in this series of Granada closedown sequences that I recorded in the 80s. The final few moments of The Sweeeney are followed by a programme trailer and an ad break. Charles Foster is the announcer on the late shift in Manchester. The much loved closedown theme music is the 'New Granada Theme' by Keith Mansfield and Derek Hilton - a specially commissioned piece which was used from 1977 until Granada went 24 hours on 13 Feb 1988. Sadly, from this date closedowns were consigned to TV history. And don't forget to switch off your computer.....Goodnight!
