2005 OSCARS for Best Short Animation
Ryan is based on the life of Ryan Larkin, a Canadian animator who, 30 years ago, produced some of the most influential animated films of his time. In the film, we hear the voices of prominent animators and artists discussing Ryan's work, and from waitresses, mission-house caretakers and homeless people who make up Ryan's life. These voices speak through strange, twisted, and disembodied, computer-generated characters--which combine to reflect the film's creator, Chris Landreth. In the words of Anais Nin, "We don't see things as they are. We see things as we are."

Under the African sun, a child walks in the desert with his kin. Death is prowling, but a mother's soul resurrected by music will return strength and life to the child when he becomes a man.
The filmmaker combines 2D animation on a graphics tablet with the warmth of sand animation, thus uniting modernity and tradition, Brazil and Africa, music and memory. Sparse in design and humanist in its outlook, Hungu exudes the elegance and suggestive power of a timeless story.

It was a dramatic year for Arinze Eze -- in love, work, even family -- and our cameras were with him for the entire journey.
Raised in Nigeria but born in Canada, Arinze Eze has always struggled to find a place of belonging. At age 21, nearly two decades after leaving Canada, he returned to his birthplace, an unfamiliar, snow-laden country. It was one of the coldest winters on record, and the people Arinze's family had arranged for him to stay with turned him away at the door. His education as an engineer was meaningless in Canada, and he was unable to find the lucrative job that was supposed to help him send riches back to his family in Africa.
Nine years later, he seems settled as a Canadian; he has re-invented himself as a talented painter, musician and filmmaker, and has fallen in love with a beautiful, charming Canadian woman.
Arinze's family still doesn't know about Tina - even though the couple has been together five years - or of their son's career in the arts. He feels the best way to help them understand his choices is to show them his new life in person. He arranges for them to visit. Arinze and Tina busy themselves with preparations, excited and more than a little nervous. Pressure and stress weigh on the relationship, and as Arinze fights with authorities to get temporary visas for his parents, his relationship begins to crumble -- right in front of the cameras.
Awkwardly negotiating the world of his parents' traditions and the demands of his relationship, Arinze searches for a middle ground. But when his born-again Christian mother and Jewish girlfriend find a common bond in their love for Arinze, he begins to see that maybe there is a way for him to belong to both worlds.

THE TWISTS AND TURNS OF MODERN LIFE
From the countdown at the start to the stock-still "END" that wraps up the film, Jeu is a dizzying whirlwind that never ceases to amaze. Georges Schwizgebel has created a frantic race ending in inertia, a metaphor for modern life's nonstop hustle and bustle. A series of shapes tricks the senses again and again as they swirl and twist in a playful dance. All the world is a stage and everyone a player, including the filmmaker himself, in this chaotic universe where men play ball and musicians play the scherzo from Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto. Jeu is an exercise in virtuality at breakneck speed. This circular and cyclical race dazzles with changes in scale orchestrated by a virtuoso of animation.

As Kasper's quest for inspiration unfolds, it appears that a spell of bad weather, an angry dog, slippery barn planks, a careless postman, hungry goats and other seemingly unrelated factors might play important roles in the big scheme of things after all.
