Billy Ocean is a Grammy Award-winning British-based popular music performer who had a string of rhythm and blues-tinged international pop hits in the 1970s and 1980s. He was the top British-based R&B singer / songwriter of the 1980s. He was born in Fyzabad, Trinidad and Tobago to Grenadian parents (born Leslie Sebastian Charles, 21 January 1950,) and moved to England with his family at the age of eight. He released his first single in 1972 on Spark Records as Les Charles.
By 1975 he adopted the name Billy Ocean, taking the surname from the 'Ocean Estate' where he lived in East London. The following year, 1976, was when he recorded his debut album, Billy Ocean, with its first single release, "Love Really Hurts Without You," charting at number 2 in the UK Singles Chart and number 22 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. More hits followed, including as "L.O.D. (Love On Delivery)". He also wrote songs for other artists such as LaToya Jackson.[2] In 1981 he hit the U.S. R&B chart with "Nights (Feel Like Getting Down)".
Ocean's period of greatest success began with Suddenly in 1984 and its main single "Caribbean Queen". The song's title and lyrics were changed for different regions, such that the song is also known as "African Queen" or "European Queen". The song won Ocean the Grammy Award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance at the 1985 Grammy Awards. The album's title track also became a hit, peaking at #4 in the US, and the song "Loverboy", while also being a #2 US hit in 1985, from the album, was also the background music for the first scene of the popular UK BBC One TV series, Casualty, in 1986. Red Light Spells Danger" was performed on Top Gear of the Pops, a Comic Relief special of the BBC Television motoring show Top Gear. It featured presenters Jeremy Clarkson on the drums, Richard Hammond on the bass and James May on the keyboard. Former lead singer of The Darkness, Justin Hawkins, guest starred on vocals.

Leo Sayer (born Gerard Hugh Sayer, 21 May 1948, Shoreham-by-Sea, Sussex) is an English singer-songwriter and musician, now based in Australia, whose singing career has spanned four decades. Sayer has had success with his single and album releases, in both the UK and the U.S. He was initially discovered by David Courtney, who co-managed him with the singer-turned-manager, Adam Faith. Sayer began his music career co-writing songs with David Courtney, including "Giving It All Away," which gave Roger Daltrey of The Who his first hit as a soloist in 1973.
That same year, Sayer began his career as a recording artist. At the time of his initial chart breakthrough in Britain, with his debut hit "The Show Must Go On," he wore a pierrot style outfit and make-up.
In 1976, Sayer recorded three Beatles songs, "I Am the Walrus", "Let It Be" and "The Long and Winding Road" for the documentary, All This and World War II.
His subsequent hits included, "Long Tall Glasses" (1974) and "Orchard Road" (1983). In 1977, he had hits with "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" (a U.S. number one), the romantic ballad, "When I Need You" (1977), which reached number one in both the UK and U.S. Sayer also had remakes of Bobby Vee's Sonny Curtis/Jerry Alison composition, "More Than I Can Say" (his fourth UK number 2 hit, and in the U.S., number 2 pop and number one in the adult contemporary chart), and Buddy Holly's "Raining In My Heart". In the U.S., three of his singles - "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" (1977), "When I Need You," (1977) and "More Than I Can Say" (1980) - were certified gold.

Sphinx was a one-off project by Alec R. Costandinos based on the betrayal of Jesus by Judas. Very similar in sound to "Romeo and Juliet" and "Hunchback of Notre Dame."
Alec R. Costandinos, (b. Alexandre Kouyoumdjian in 1944 in Cairo, Egypt). His father was Armenian and his mother was Greek. He has long been considered one of the original catalysts of the French disco scene of the 70's. He was also intimately involved as a writer, publisher and musician in the development of Aphrodite's Child with Vangelis and Greek-born pop singer, Demis Roussos. Aside his name, he has also written under the pseudonym R. Rupen, which is rumoured to be his middle name. On the disco front, he contributed to the debut album of Crystal Grass, which featured the club hit "Crystal World", released on the Philips label in France. Alec was also the publisher of hits for various artists including French chanteuse Dalida.
He is known for his outstanding collaborations that assisted in the development of French disco drummer Cerrone. During Cerrone's tenure with John Kongos and later fusion act Kongas, their collaboration "Anikana-O", led to the solo release of Cerrone's "Love In C Minor". The 17 minute disco opus was an instant disco hit and sent shockwaves through the club circuit, echoing Donna Summer's ode to love from a male perspective. Four cuts were featured on the complete album, including the spectacular "Midnite Lady".
After parting company with Cerrone, Constandinos launched his own project, the aptly titled Love & Kisses. Released initially on the Barclay distributed Rei Vera label in France, his two song album, featuring "Accidental Lover" and the instant classic "I've Found Love (Now That I've Found You)" rocketed up the Billboard Disco Charts. Sung by the late Joanne Stone (also known as Joanne Williamstone), with a chorus rumoured to be a collective of Sunny Leslie & Sue Glover, it was the genesis of Alec's foray into the U.S. disco market. It also featured a provocative cover, with four hands ripping the t-shirt of a scantily clad model. Casablanca Records immediately snapped up the American rights to the album, the first of a long term collaboration of projects. "Accidental Lover" was also covered in America, and released on the Salsoul imprint owned by Tom Moulton.
Costandinos collaborated for a 2nd time with French arranger Raymond Donnez, aka Don Ray on an additional project, in the form of a re-telling of Shakespeare's "Romeo & Juliet". Using the same ensemble cast as with Love & Kisses, it also rocketed to # 1. This project was composed completely by Alec himself, delivered in five pieces of in "suite" form, with parts 1 & 2 being the "hit single" elements and the "B" side being more of a downtempoed "morning music" flavour. The project was released under the name Alec. R Costandinos & The Synchophonic Orchestra.
Several other concept albums were produced by Alec. The story of Judas Iscariot was presented in the form of "Simon Peter" on the album Sphinx. Paris Connection, was essentially an album of previously recorded songs such as "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" framed around newly created elements. The gem of this project was a blissful re-interpretation of Barry Ryan's 1965 hit "Eloise" as the key selection. He has also scored international movies such as "Trocadero Bleu Citron". Perhaps the best of his more "underground" or "cult" recordings was "Golden Tears" by Sumeria. The story of a man who falls to earth to become part of the human race, it features hits such as "Dance (And Leave It All Behind You). Loosely, it also appears to foreshadow a few ABC television series developed around the same time: Mork & Mindy.

The Saragossa Band is a German pop band which was successful mainly in the 70's and 80's. Today, the band still have successful performances in Romania, Hungary and Austria.
Members were: Thommy Brandner, Harry Carrere, Dusty Klaerl, Georg Klanthe, Gloria Rennals, Alfred Rudec, Helmut Schiffner, Pit Troy Henry and Whisky.
The band debuted in 1977 by the song Big Bamboo. Then Rasta Man and Zabadak followed. Another hits are: Ginger Red, Agadou, Aiko Aiko. To me, their best work was To The Music Hitmakers which is too rare now.

Supermax is a project of the Austrian musician and producer Kurt Hauenstein, best known for "Love Machine", a 1979 German number four single that peaked at #6 in Switzerland, #9 in Austria and #96 in U.S. The members of the band were Hauenstein, Hans Ochs (g), Ken Taylor (bg), Lothar Krell (Keyboard), Peter Koch (dr) and the singers Cee Cee Cobb and Jean Graham. In 1981 Supermax toured as the first mixed-race band through South-Africa and Venda. 21 concerts were played by the band. Despite warnings and death threats, Supermax finished the tour, but this made some countries refuse permits for entry and consequently the group was black-listed by some political organizations.

Having exhausted this concept, and far too busy churning out concept album after concept album, Midney chose not to release another under this banner. Luckily for fans both albums were re-issued in 1999 on compact disc.

They were fronted by lead singer Jean Patrick (born 6 April 1954, in Martinique) and Annette (born 1 November 1958), with Daniel Vangarde and Jean Kluger the main songwriters. They are best known for their two hit singles "D.I.S.C.O." and "Hands Up (Give Me Your Heart)". They also performed "Hello Rio" a song produced and written by Bobby Orlando, also known as Bobby O. He is more famous for founding The Fast later to be known as Man 2 Man, Divine, The Flirts and The Pet Shop Boys.
The band was originally founded by Patrick - as Black Underground. He was introduced to Kluger by Vangarde, who managed the band. Under the new name of Ottawan, they were active over a three year period from 1979 to 1981. They were signed to the French record label, Carrere.
In the United Kingdom they had two Top Ten UK Singles Chart hits. "D.I.S.C.O.", the act's debut single, reached number two in September 1980; "Hands Up" peaked at number three nearly a year later.
In France, their single "You're OK" (French title "T'es OK") is one of the top 50 best selling singles of all time.
Patrick quit the band and organized a new duo, Pam 'n Pat, with whom he scored another European dance hit, "To Be Superman" in 1982. Later, he re-organized Ottawan and toured Europe with his new partner, Tamara.
Soon after Patrick quit again with the group and started his solo project " Ottman Jones", Esther de Bijl continued Ottawan with the new singer Robert Walker. Until today they are still touring the globe.

Seasons in the Sun" was a worldwide hit song for Terry Jacks in 1974. It was first released in the United States and Canada early in the year, and rose to number one in America by March 2. An earlier recording appeared on The Kingston Trio's 1963 album, Time to Think. The song had also been done by English band The Fortunes in 1968, and by Pearls Before Swine in 1970/71.
The song was based on "Le Moribond" ("The Dying Man"), written by Jacques Brel in 1961. Brel's song was translated into English by poet Rod McKuen and this version was first recorded by Bob Shane of the Kingston Trio, but it did not sell. The Beach Boys also recorded the song but it was never released.[1]
Terry Jacks, who had participated in the Beach Boys recording, and who had in fact introduced the song to the group,[2] rewrote part of the lyrics to "lighten them up." Jacks' revisions tended to add a bit of ambiguity as to the nature of the storyteller's demise, allowing listeners the option to choose whether the death is from suicide over a failed life - quite possibly to escape drug addiction - or someone accepting death from natural causes, or cancer. References to a cheating wife were also removed.

Smokie is an English glam rock band from Bradford who found success in Europe in the 1970s. On 1975 their first album, Pass It Around was released. In the same year, they released their second album Changing All the Time. Their third album, Midnight Café built on the popularity of Changing All the Time and established the group as a new pop phenomenon. The following years yielded a string of successful singles: "Something's Been Making Me Blue", "Wild Wild Angels" and "I'll Meet You at Midnight" gained a faithful following among younger listeners. When their single "Living Next Door to Alice" was released in November 1976, it quickly became the group's biggest hit, followed by the equally successful "Lay Back in the Arms of Someone".
