Lion cub in hydrotherapy - 304 sec
Captive-born lion cub Samira is beating the odds to survive in the most unconventional way. Just 4 days after being born, she sustained a tragic injury when her mother accidentally bit through the tendons of her leg while trying to carry her. Her mother, Saffi, rejected the cub and attempted to bury her in the corner of the enclosure. Samira's keeper Pete Thompson feared the leg would have to be amputated, but thankfully animal hydrotherapist Roz Chaplin was able to exercise the leg back into fitness. Sea lions have teeth brushed - 180 sec
Wild sea lions may not care much about their fishy breath, but the French National Sea Experience Centre does - their captive sea lions have now been introduced to the joys of clean teeth and fresh breath. Keepers clean the captive sea lions' teeth daily with a traditional tooth brush and toothpaste, but it's taken some getting used to. "Sea lioins are used to the smell of fish and so some new smells such as toothpaste are not that likeable for sea lions. Each time we present them with a new smell, we have to teach them to get used to it," says Head sea lion keeper Jean-Luc Bourgain. The dental care is a part of the centre's health regime and is essentially preventative. "Just like humans, we have to...
