Under two months Japan is coming back to the Antarctic Whale sanctuary for another 1000 whales. This includes endangered species and random sampling. Random sampling is when they hunt any whale they see including calves and mothers. A mother once lost its calf and fasted it self for several days while drifting in the water. Not only does the mother get depressed but through their social networking, which is very complex and can't be understood by humans, other whales get depressed.
The whales they kill in the Antarctic swim right past australia and give birth in our waters. We protect them, then when they are swming back to antarctica the japanese kill them which can take up to 30 mins.
These whales were born in Asutralia! What are you going to do Australia?
Are you going to let another 1000 whales die?
Are you just gonna sit there?

I decided to go see the Steve Irwin in Brisbane; this was a unique opportunity as it is currently sealed off to the public for refitting and repairs. So because of the repairs/refitting, the footage on here is of the Steve Irwin is at its worse, its normally tidy... Unfortunately I had to cut a lot of footage as it had crews faces, plans, etc that cant be shown publicly on the net. I hope you understand, I tried my best to place together a video, but its hard to fully show/explain it unless you go visit yourself.
For me the tour/discussions on the ship has totally changed my view on things. One very interesting topic we talked about was the arrest warrants we came to the conclusion that Japan knows they don't need to make the arrest warrants internationally recognised all they need is to keep them going by keep funding the arrests warrants to 'scare' future crew away. He called it a "S.L.A.P", instead of trying to cut the head (P.Watson) off the organisation; they are cutting it off by the feet. It doesn't even matter if its Japanese law enforced because under the 'law of the sea' it still has to be the captain, so not even in Japan would it be court holding... as long as Japan keeps funding and refreshing those arrest warrants it can have a massive effect on future volunteers of SSCS.
Another interesting topic was the changes that Japan is making on their new terrorism laws, which basically says if you interfere with a "Japanese commercial program" its classified as terrorism. But one thing is wrong with that, Japan says their whaling is not a commercial program but a research classified program, if they do charge SSCS with terrorism they are basically saying their whaling is a commercial hunt and proves Japan to be in a international violation. Lots of quotes behind that but I am just going off the top of my head for now. Anyway we had lots of these types of discussions.
As for the ship itself, it is incredible! It was a bit messy because at this present moment its cut off from public for repairs, so my footage is of the Steve Irwin is at its worse. Anyway it's incredible; I was sitting in the captain's seat just looking out the front bridge window and just remembered footage of Paul standing there with an image of a pirate whaling ship outside. Of course my real view was Brisbane City, but it is amazing placing footage to the real thing. One place which was 'scary' (I think that's the word for it) was where Paul Watson was shot. All these places was just so interesting, these links of footage and the Steve Irwin has dramatically expanded my understanding. I recommend everyone reading this to go see the Steve Irwin themselves, it is life changing.

While in Santiago, Chile for the 60th Meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), Sea Shepherd Conservation Society officially announced plans to return to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary to once again oppose illegal Japanese whaling activities.
This year's campaign, Sea Shepherd's fifth campaign to Antarctic waters, will be called Operation Musashi in reference to the legendary Japanese strategist, Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi's Book of Five Rings included the approach of the Twofold Way of Pen and Sword. Sea Shepherd's goal is to send two fast ships to the Southern Ocean with the purpose of continuously keeping the Japanese whaling fleet on the run.
"We intend to sink the Japanese fleet economically," said Captain Watson. "Our strategy is to prevent whales from being killed, to force Japan to spend money on fuel without killing whales. My crew and I will not watch whales die, we will not bear witness to the cruel slaughter of a single whale without risking our lives to prevent its unlawful and cruel murder. If the members of the IWC refuse to act to save the whales, then it is up to us to take this fight onto the high seas where we will prevail in the next season even more successfully than we prevailed in the last season."
The name Operation Musashi was chosen to reflect Sea Shepherd's approach of aggressive, yet nonviolent, confrontation and the increasing global awareness of Japan's ongoing illegal whaling activities; thus the crossed feather pen and katana (sword) under the skull with the imbedded sperm whale and dolphin yin-yang symbol. The Banzai flag background gives reference to the ecological imperialism that Japan is committing against the whales of the Southern Ocean.
Sea Shepherd is not a protest organization. It was established in 1977 to intervene against the illegal exploitation of marine life in accordance with the principles of the United Nations World Charter for Nature. However, as with all Sea Shepherd campaigns, all strategies and tactics are designed to avoid any physical injury to the whalers.

A tribute to Colin, the orphaned Humpback Whale.

I want to thank everyone involved in trying to save Colin or later known as Corlette.
I created this quick video myself to show my support for everyone who helped and of course for Colin. She will always be named Colin to me and we must not let this happen again. SSCS tried to put pressure on the wildlife group and presented them with the formula, but they would not listen. A court order was drawn up as a killing of a whale in Aus waters is prohibited, but they were about 5mins to late.
WAW is normally to do with the fact of whaling, but has extended to whale conservation in general. We work with other organisations to try form a link between them all and aim towards the same goal of whale conservation. A future whale rescue organisation is also being discussed and when that comes out WAW will fully support it and advertise it.
Sea World from the Gold Coast replied to WAW formal email of the suggestions made for Colin. It was a total disregard for our services, they said "please consider the whale's welfare first over own emotional empathy". I took over this email and replied personally, here is some parts to my reply email:
"'emotional empathy' over its welfare? I totally disagree with your stereotype of my views, Sea Worlds vet didn't come down until today, who did you say doesn't care about this whales welfare?...I get told by whalers that I am fighting for them because of emotion and now my own country's Sea World is saying that, your view is nothing more then a whalers view. I am disgraced by your email and it is a total disregard for all my work for Australian Whales...I care more then anything about whales welfares and though putting down this whale may be the best decision now, would it have been the best decision five days ago? you could have saved this whale back then if YOU cared about his welfare...It may be a bit extreme comparing your email to a whalers, but just like a whaler you have the death of a innocent baby whale on your hands...I hope you are proud of your work,"
This year Japan will be killing minke and endangered fin calfs. They do not care what they catch, even pregant mothers. Their goal is to harpoon the calf and let is struggle for awhile and when the mother comes up to defend its calf the Japanese harpooner boat will then take the mother. This way the Japanese whalers get two whales from just finding one. It is illegal to hunt pregant whales and calfs under a certain age, its also illegal to conduct whaling full stop. Let alone in a IWC whale Sanctuary, where are the whales safe in this world?
This issue with Colin was on Australias own soil and our government did nothing. Peter Garret announced that he will be forming a better global whale conservation group and said he would send navy ships down to Antarctica to arrest these pirate whalers. But his done nothing, not even for Colin who had no influence of another country. Before I said the Australian government wouldn't stand up to Japan, now I say the Australiam government won't stand up for the whales.
We must push our government to carry out what they have promised, for Colins sake and whale conservation. If we don't, Colins death was a waste and he died achiveing nothing, but if we Australians keep up our efforts we will achieve whale conservation and save 1000's of whales.
Colin brought everyone together across the country, lets stick together and fight for whale conservation.

Many pro-whalers say Australians are racist, greeedy, self centred etc. This is a scapegoat for the pro-whalers. In fact Australia has a very good relationship with Japan. we are not racist, we are a multicutlural country and are made up of many cultures. We would be the last to be racist.
The fact is over half the world is against whaling, pro-whalers try to make out its australians and only australia. This is simply not true.
Many nations are against whaling, recently new members to the anti-whaling group is the UN committe and he European Comission (all euro countries). this means the WHOLE of europe wants to Japan to stop its illegal hunt and illegal trade.
Pro-whalers may try and cause conflict between Australia and Japan, but it won't work and it especially won't justify whaling. Have you ever noticed a pro-whalers defence will have nothnig to do with whaling? its just all about Australia.
Its time for the pro-whlers to stop using this as a scapegoat and come up with real results. Everytime they bring up Australia and racism thy are just exposing their own racism towards Australians.

PART TWO of TWO
Norway:
They hunt over 1000 minke whales a year in international waters. For the past 15 years not once has Norway fulfilled their quota due to lack of whales. Norway also illegally exports whale meat to Iceland and the Faroes.
Iceland:
They hunt servel hundred whales a year. Including endangered ones. Iceland often hunts the second biggest whale in the world - the 'Fin'. It is highly endangered and is on critical red.
Whale Watching:
WHALE and dolphin watching is one of the fastest growing industries in the Pacific, injecting millions of dollars into local economies, a new report shows.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) report shows whale watching is worth $23 million a year to small Pacific nations.
The number of people in the region watching the marine mammals has jumped an average 45 per cent each year.
There were just 10,309 whale and dolphin watchers in Pacific island nations in 1998, but that figure had risen to 110,716 in 2005.
The figures released today exclude Australian and New Zealand data, although earlier research showed about 1.6 million people watch whales and dolphins in Australia annually, in an industry worth about $273 million each year.
Former New Zealand minister and International Whaling Commission (IWC) delegate Jim McClay opened the IFAW meeting today in Auckland.
He said each humpback whale which visited Tonga was worth about $US1 million ($A1.1 million) to the local economy during a 15-year period and urged Japan to stop hunting the mammals.
"Whales are worth more alive than dead,'' he said.
Japan has been accused of using aid money to bribe Pacific nations including the Solomon Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Tuvalu, Palau and the Marshall Islands in exchange for support at IWC meetings.
Solomon Islands conservation officer Jointly Sisiolo, who is attending the meeting, said his government would be more willing to support whale conservation if whale-based tourism increased.
"I would prefer it (whaling) to stop completely. That is my position. I want to see it stop, and to promote tourism," Sisiolo said.
"The Japanese are going against how most of us Pacific islanders look at whaling. They are killing whales. We are looking at trying to conserve them."

Japan hunts 1000's of whales a year under a loophole in the IWC system. In the whole fleet there is only two scienist onboard and the 'lab' is smaller then their rooms.
Japan has produced several scienific papers. Only 4 are reconised by the IWC. So they killed 1000's of whales over a 40 year period for 4 papers!
