Tracing opals to their source location. Opals occur most commonly around basalt deposits, though they can be a mineralized gel replacement for wood (petrified wood is one process, opal is another). To look for opal: go to the basalt (lava) areas (use a USGS mineral map), then look for depressions (old springs) or flat areas on hillsides where you see the ground pictured in the film. Opals have a specific gravity lighter than sand so pieces (float opal) will come to the surface. Start looking for pieces (the tops will be sun-baked white). If you are finding obsidian (volcanic glass) walk up to a lower temp. mineralization and look for opal. Opal can be black opal, white opal, red (fire) opal, clear opal, or solid opal, and precious opal can be found right along with common opal. Precious opal can (in some cases) be found with ultraviolet light. Some opal can be up to 20% water, and be subject to cracking and crazing if not dried over a period of years. What I personally like about the hillside prospecting method shown is the opal has been thoroughly dried out over the eons and is ready to cut into jewelry from day one. How much opal was recovered in this film? Pounds. Get out there and find yourself some opals -- and defend the 1872 mining law -- it is the only piece of paper that gives the average citizen the right to be on public property, whether prospecting or riding a bicycle. Beware of those trying to change or take it away in the name of "protecting" the land -- they are only taking away your freedoms.

Techniques for playing with handicaps, fretboard explained, tricks and tips learned the hard way. Rickenbacker 12-string, Hamer, and Gibson ES-335 used. This particular Rickenbacker is a Rickenbacker 360-V64-12 (a copy of the 1st prototype Rickenbacker 12 presented George Harrison by the Rickenbacker Corporation). Although a beautiful instrument, it is somewhat diifficult to play due to very low frets and a narrow fingerboard (George Harrison commented on this as well) so I would not recommend it as a first choice for LMGP. The Tom Petty designed Rickenbacker model has a wider board and is widely touted as vastly easier to play -- I'd go with that as a first choice. That said, this 1999 Rickenbacker is certainly eye candy and can boom out some great sounding tunes if you're careful on the frets. Gibson Guitar ES-335. While in Atlanta taking care of my cousin's dog Suki, simply did a recording of "Old Crow" for her return from knee surgery. "Old Crow" was one of the first things I wrote while using the guitar to get my fingers working again. Gibson Guitar 335 into a Roland MicroCube mini-amp. I am sometimes asked why I use the Gibson Guitars ES-335 instead of the Hamers or others I have. A lot of it is simple ergonomics. The Gibson 335 series has a big bridge that I can rest my hand on while feeling for the string my left hand is fretting (I have little feeling in my left hand). I do play the 12-string Hamer Duotone on occasion, but that is much more of a whacking of strings than plucking like I can do (somewhat) with the Gibson 335.

Of course, the star, Johhny Goodlooking, would do all the speaking and finding gold (after I found it), but the series never came off (about using modern electronics to revive old-time occupations). Gold & Gem Locations: TREASURESITES.COM Do not discount the "pretty" rocks found along with gold. The sapphires you see are worth many times more than gold. Sapphire (& Ruby, (corundum), is like garnet, a relatively high specific gravity that will catch in a sluice readily. These gems act as gold, they will drop behind a boulder, in bedrock cracks, and set up in the stratiform layers of a bar on the inside bend of a stream. In a perfect (laboratory world) a river bar sets up from front to back: Gold, Platinum, Lead, Iron Ore (black sand), Gems, Sand. and in a stratiform layer (top to bottom) Sand, Gems, Iron Ore, Lead, Platinum, Gold. In the real world big gold drops out at the head of the bar and as the bar is formed, it forms an airfoil shape which sucks light gold flakes (and gems) to the back of the bar. What you want to look for is concentrations of black sands at the back of the bar to know there is gold (and gems) likely. At the front of the bar will be the heaviest gold (nuggets) and gems, but they may be too deep or covered by massive layers of boulders to get to. Just remember to follow the black sands and move slightly ahead of them for the richest concentrations of fine & flake gold (and gems). More info at my website on the Gold and Gems info page.
