New Music Minute - Futureheads & Hayden - 190 sec
THE FUTUREHEADS The Futureheads are a four-piece English post-punk revival band from Sunderland. The band met at Bede College as a trio with Barry Hyde on vocals and guitar, Jaff on bass, and Peter Brewis on drums. Ross Millard (vocals and guitar) joined soon after having been in a band with Jaff. They used the Sunderland City Detached Youth Project building (where Brewis and Hyde worked) as a free practice space, fitting since the project was intended to get young people off the streets by using music. They first performed in 2000, and through word-of-mouth their reputation in the local area grew. Hyde's younger brother Dave (who replaced Brewis, who went on to join fellow north east rockers Field Music) joined later, and their first single was released in 2002. They recently released their new album "This is Not the World". HAYDEN Paul Hayden Desser (born 1971) who records as Hayden, is a Canadian singer-songwriter from Thornhill, Ontario. His early works are a largely eclectic mix of genres from grunge rock to alt country, as demonstrated by his first full album, Everything I Long For. Since then his work has become progressively quieter and more mature. His latest release, 2008's In Field & Town, is almost exclusively slow, acoustic, and more refined.

New Music Minute- Langhorne Slim & Chambao - 270 sec
LANGHORNE SLIM Langhorne Slim is a young folk singer, born Sean Scolnick on August 20th, 1980, based out of Brooklyn, New York. Originally hailing from Langhorne, Pennsylvania, he graduated from the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College. His music is said to, "conjure images of many other neo-folk singers, but there's soul, fire, and warmth in his recordings". Langhorne Slim's band the War Eagles consists of Paul Defiglia on bass and Malachi DeLorenzo on drums. In an interview Slim stated, "If folk music means music for the people, then that's what I would like to be as naturally or unnaturally as that may occur. I wanna make peoples' heads explode with good feelings. I would like to move people and be moved. " CHAMBAO Chambao is a flamenco-electronic band originally from Málaga, Andalusia, Spain, known for a Flamenco Chill sound that fuses flamenco sounds and palos with electronic music. The name of the band is taken from an improvised form of beach tent that is constructed as a means of sheltering from the wind and sun. Some refer to their recordings as chill out music. This is an electronic style of music but it is slow and does not try to create a trance like rhythm. Discovered by the Dutch musician Henrik Takkenberg, they started as a trio of Málaga musicians, María del Mar, Eduardo and Dani (who left the band in 2005) have released two albums of their own. New Music Minute featuring Ingrid Michaelson & Nicole Atkins - 335 sec
Staten Island native Ingrid Michaelson was born into a house of all things artistic. Following in the eclectic footsteps of her mother, a sculptor, and her father, a classical composer, Ingrid began piano lessons at only four years old. Her songwriting career began after college while touring the country in a national theater troupe and spending all her free time composing the songs that would eventually make it onto her current record, Girls and Boys. An entrepreneur as well as a talented musician, Ingrid released Girls and Boys on her own label. Three months after the CD release, Ingrid won a national songwriting award. In November 2006, an unexpected phone call catapulted her career forward. The music supervisor from Grey's Anatomy wanted to use the song "Breakable" in an upcoming episode. Following the exposure on Grey's Anatomy, Ingrid's career as an independent artist immediately hit the fast track and she began to achieve milestones previously unheard of for an artist not signed to a major label. NICOLE ATKINS The shores of New Jersey are littered with small towns whose better days are far in the past. They're towns that have been written about, and sung over; towns that have been mythologized and idealized; and they are the towns that 28-year-old musician Nicole Atkins--a native of Neptune City, located a stones throw from fabled Asbury Park was born and raised. They can be places steeped in their own history, buried under the sense of their own pasts. Places of hey-days and what-once-was. And it's that sense of something lost and of what perhaps should have been, and what might be, that permeates Atkins's debut, Neptune City. The characters in her tunes seem to live in an idealized past. "This record is the history of my town; it's the history of my family and friend in this town," she explains. "From the time I was a kid I started collecting these sad little tragically beautiful personal stories from the people in my life, and my own as well. That sense of history really appeals to me as an artist." For More Information goto: http://www.fastfocus.tv

New Music Minute Featuring Old 97's & Gossip - 340 sec
OLD 97's Some bands blast out of the gate and never recapture their early energy. Other bands establish themselves as models of consistency. Still other bands take a while to find them. And then there are bands like the Old 97s, who blast out of the gate, establish themselves as models of consistency, take a while to find themselves, and then, fifteen years in, deliver a glorious record that sums up everything about them that fans have always loved. With Blame It On Gravity, the latest Old 97's record the band has made its definitive statement. GOSSIP Gossip is a band consisting of: Beth Ditto (vocals), Brace Paine (guitar, bass,) and Hannah Blilie (drums). Gossip is one of pop music's most uncompromised bands. In April 2008, they put all of their personal relationships and other commitments on hold to jump on a plane, land, bundle up in a van and then drive to a city near you in celebration of "Gossip - Live In Liverpool." Gossip was chosen as the featured artist in MTV's "52/52" campaign which is a new way to give 'unprecedented exposure" to unsigned artists, and 'indie bands', in a completely new and innovative way. They recently made an appearance on the David Letterman Show. For More Information goto: http://www.fastfocus.tv

New Music Minute - Paddy Casey and ONCE Soundtrack - 350 sec
NEW MUSIC MINUTE -- PADDY CASEY Irish musician Paddy Casey knew he wanted to break fresh ground on his latest work. He was thinking Sly and the Family Stone meet Simon Garfunkel. He came up with the blueprint for songs that would have blues licks, funky guitars and Stax-style trumpets. Songs that would sit easily aside the more poignant songs full of personal meaning he already had. He thought of what he had, thought of Los Angeles and the idea was born. "I love the title Addicted To Company says Paddy - for me it just sums up the human condition - in that it's a realization that sometimes maybe it's enough to just be with the people you're with". NEW MUSIC MINUTE --ONCE (Excerpted from NY Times). Filmed with more efficiency than elegance on the streets of Dublin, Mr. Carney's movie, a favorite at Sundance earlier this year, does not look, sound or feel like a typical musical. It is realistic rather than fanciful, and the characters work patiently on the songs rather than bursting spontaneously into them. But its low-key affect and decidedly human scale endow "Once" with an easy, lovable charm that a flashier production could never have achieved. The formula is simple: two people, a few instruments, 88 minutes and not a single false note. New Music Minute presents an excerpt from ONCE. New Music Minute - Virginia Coalition - 275 sec
Virginia Coalition is a band that has made its reputation with the blazing energy of its live shows and ability to play almost any style of music. Home This Year sees the band moving in a new direction. They ventured to California, challenging themselves to find a more emotionally intense means of expression. "There's a value to the time you put into a project," lead singer Andy Poliakoff explains. "We didn't allow ourselves to be satisfied with the first, or even third version of a song. We're getting older, and we wanted more than bombast. We wanted to look outside ourselves and find something more reflective, more truthful, more universal, to open a new chapter in the band's songwriting history." New Music Minute - Kathy Mattea - 250 sec
Grammy Award winning Kathy Mattea's latest recording, COAL, is more than just mining songs. Mattea says she wanted to pay tribute to "my place and my people". Raised near Charleston, West Virginia, her mining heritage is thick: both her parents grew up in coal camps, both her grandfathers were miners, her mother worked for the local UMWA. "It's a coming together of a lot of different threads of her life. The album was just a sketch of an idea until the Sago Mine Disaster, which killed twelve West Virginia miners. 'Now is the time to do these songs' Mattea says. For More Information goto: http://www.BN.com/newmusicminute

New Music Minute - North Mississippi Allstars/Black Crowes - 350 sec
NORTH MISSISSIPPI ALLSTARS Guitarist-vocalist Luther Dickinson says of the North Mississippi Allstars' Hernando. "Musically, it's our most solid statement. It's just real natural and organic and honest. Luther -- who is joined by his band mates: Brother Cody on drums and friend Chris Chew on bass to help them develop the nuevo-retro sound, the Allstars turned to a familiar studio partner: Luther and Cody's father, the legendary James Luther Dickinson. Hernando was recorded in the group's North Mississippi hometown, at Jim Dickinson's studio Zebra Ranch. Luther and the band were aiming for a new-millennium version of the sound engineer Eddie Kramer developed with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. BLACK CROWES The Black Crowes recently released their first new studio recording in seven years. "Warpaint" is a declaration of our soulful independence," says Chris Robinson, the creative force behind this band with his brother Rich for the past 18 years. Their new songs build on the band's trademark adventurous brew of rock, blues, country, soul and gospel. "People have wondered if it's a political record or if these are protest songs. I say no, my politics are the politics of beauty. And if that's something you're into, then you have to understand the myriad of shades we have in something beautiful -- from joy to pain to sorrow, from tenderness to ugliness." As always, The Black Crowes continue to do things their own way.

New Music Minute featuring Ray Davies & Mike Doughty - 290 sec
RAY DAVIES Ray Davies is the legendary musician and Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame member (founder, singer, songwriter of The Kinks), His latest solo recording features 12 new songs written by Davies, and co-produced with Grammy Award winning producer/engineer Ray Kennedy. Recorded in Nashville, and mixed in London, Working Man's Cafe is Davies' second solo album following his solo debut in May 2006. Davies focuses on the plight of the worker, the every day man around the world. It is Davies' "American record" describing the changes he's seen in this country since he first started visiting in the '60s. In a recent Mojo Magazine review Davies is described as having a "tourist's blend of enchantment and bafflement" when writing about the United States. MIKE DOUGHTY Mike Doughty's father was in the U.S. Army and Doughty was schooled on Army bases in the United States and Europe. "I was too sensitive, too questioning. When I found music, it changed everything" says Doughty. He played bass in a high school band and started writing songs. By the time he entered the New School in New York City to study poetry, he'd developed his syncopated guitar style. Mike Doughty's new recording, Golden Delicious, is a freewheeling set. Its most political song is "Fort Hood" the Texas Army base that has lost the most troops in the Iraq War." "I visited some of the wounded troops at Walter Reed Hospital in D.C. and wondered what was going through their minds. When I first sang the chorus 'Let the Sunshine In" (from Hair) I felt myself tearing up" says Doughty.

James Hunter - People Gonna Talk - 260 sec
Hunter is a modern singer who unapologetically embraces the R&B sounds of the 50s and early 60s. Hes developed a sizeable following in the UK for his brand of authentic soul music, which he is now bringing to the US. He found a fan in legendary singer Van Morrison, and ended up touring with him on both sides of the Atlantic. At a time when radio is spewing a fair amount of anti-music, theres a lot of appeal to his work that basks in engaging tunes, soulful vocals and the simple arrangements of guitar, bass, saxophone and drums.
