Originating from Niassa in northern Mozambique, one of the poorest parts of Africa, Massukos speak out against the hardships that have affected their lives. Passionate about what they do, the band travels for miles to remote villages to deliver simple life-saving messages such as "more condoms less partners". Feliciano dos Santos - the leader of Massukos - is also the director of Estamos, who are involved with the installation of latrines and clean water points, as well as hygiene and HIV/AIDS education. http://tuneyourworld.ning.com/profile/Massukos

Soulfege Musician, Derrik Ashong, video response to Obama - 458 sec
http://soulfege.calabashmusic.com/ On Jan. 31, Derrick Ashong, a 32-year-old musician and leader of the band Soulfege, was carrying a sign for Barack Obama outside the Hollywood theater at the Democratic primary debate taking place that day. His sign said "¡Sí, se puede!" (Yes, we can!), and he joined a crowd milling around in the street. Then a guy carrying a video camera came by and began asking Derrik a series of very pointed questions about why he supported Barak Obama. "So why are you for Obama?" he asked. It was clear from his approach that he expected a shallow answer. But, as it turned out, Derrick was glad to be asked, and held forth for almost six minutes — which is a very long time for regular broadcast television. — on universal health care, single-payer approaches and public-private partnerships. This video is Derrick's own response to the emotional component of his support for Obama. Derrick clearly appealed to the youth movement that is shaking up the 2008 campaign. While his video could have been lost among the YouTube clutter, an editor at The New York Times heard about it and soon it drew over 800,000 views. Derrick was quoted in the NY Times as saying, "Certain types of discourse are better suited to the Web. There has been so much talk about how this campaign is all about style and no substance, and this video contradicts that. There are reasons that we support Obama, and it has to do with the issues. You can't get that on CNN right now, you can't get that on MSNBC right now, and young people saw it on YouTube and they took it." Find Soulfege's music: http://soulfege.calabashmusic.com/

Samba Tremeterra - Brazil Carnival! - 212 sec
http://sambatremeterra.calabashmusic.com/ The Brazilian Samba drummers and dancers of the batucada group, Samba Tremeterra have been performing under Deraldo Ferreira's direction for several years. Based out of the Brazilian Cultural Center of New England, the group is the real thing. The Cultural Center was recently named an international Culture Point by none other than Brazil's Minister of Culture, Gilberto Gil. Here in Boston (where this video was shot) it is rare to have the chance to dance samba, outdoors, in the warm sun. Boston is home to one of the largest Brazilian populations in the U.S., so this could be as close to a Brazilian carnival atmosphere as you can get in North America. We are blessed to have this great resource here in New England!! http://calabashmusic.com

Dennis Brown Ft. Sly and Robbie - Revolution - 234 sec
http://slyrobbie.calabashmusic.com/ Drummer Lowell 'Sly' Dunbar (got his nickname Sly from listening to Sly Stone) and bass player Robert Shakespeare met in the mid seventies. Sly already had quite a reputation as a drummer. He had played on several Jamaican hit records. Robert Shakespear had already done a good deal of studio work, like 'Stir it up' from Bob Marley and some stuff with the Aggravators. Sly was playing at a club called Tit for Tat and Robbie was up the street at Evil People. They heard each other playing on their breaks, and they liked what they heard. It didn't take very long for them to decide to form a rhythmic drum-'n-bass partnership, and Sly & Robbie was a fact. In Jamaica they released several albums with the Revolutionaries, some of which were later released in Europe and the USA. Get more at http://www.calabashmusic.com
