part four - salsa-casino dance instruction
Many people start dancing salsa with the idea of incorporating as many complicated turns and steps as possible. This is the dance sport - heavy on technique - forget listening to the music approach. There is another way.
In this section Lázaro Pedroso and Tamara Toledo teach their "No Tricks Natural Method", a simple and fun approach to dancing Cuban Salsa using dance movements that everyone can do. Their method focuses on dancing to the music using natural patterns and movements that can be strung together to create exciting dance combinations.
Lázaro and Tamara's class covers:
• dance philosophy
• body position
• traveling using basic patterns you already know such as: walking forward, walking backward, turns, walking to the side, inside turn women, outside turn women, dile que no (cross body lead)
• the basic patterns in combinations
• the importance of preparation and momentum
• a dance demonstration using all these methods
The entire class instruction is in English spoken by Lázaro. "Un Trio Inseparable" is a master class for all lovers of salsa, Latin dance, and Latin music, who want to learn and fully explore the three essential popular dance forms of Cuba from which all modern styles of salsa developed - the danzón, son, and chachachá.
Leading the class is musician, dancer, and teacher extraordinaire Roberto Borrell, a Cuban gentleman who embodies his culture and has dedicated his life to perserving and passing on Cuba's rich traditions. Captivated by the music as a teenager, Roberto learned to dance and play music in the vibrant dance salons and social clubs of Havana in the early 1950's. see bio on Roberto Borrell
Over the past 20 years while residing the USA, Roberto has developed a comprehensive system of teaching the traditional popular dances of Cuba inspired by the manner in which he learned - the old school "open your eyes, open your ears" method. It's a simple approach, yet you will be challenged to listen to your feet, to the music, and to become part of what Roberto calls the inseparable trio: the music, man, and woman.
Accompanying Roberto is his favorite dance partner Viola Gonzales. Viola, along with her partner Garry Johnson, are professional dance teachers, and offer salsa classes in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Descarga in Spanish means to unload. The tradition of descarga in Cuba is about unloading creatively in music - a special form where musicians can improvise and interact with more freedom. To this end, descargas often have stripped down arrangements of a repeating melody line, strong bass, and percussion. With this rhythmic groove solid, individual musicians have permission to solo, invent, and stretch out.
In the spirit of descarga, a group of exceptional Cuban musicians assembled under the leadership of Santiago "Chaguito" Garzón, the former musical director of "Rumberos de Cuba" and "Clave Y Guaguancó. For this project Chaguito invited a group of longtime friends, many from his native Guantánamo. Included are musicians from such legendary groups as Conjunto Chappottín y Sus Estrellas, Orquesta Sublime, and Pachito Alonso y Sus Kini Kini.
Descarga Pi-Mozambi-Son is a series of eight music sessions that reflect the depth and beauty of popular and folkloric Cuban music, as well as featuring new inventive forms that are mixtures of the classic genres.

Salsa Suelta means "loose salsa" ...salsa danced without a partner. Have you seen those great step routines many salsa band members do on stage? The Cubans call it salsa suelta.
Similar to rueda de casino, salsa suelta is initiated when people want to party and dance together as a larger group. But instead of dancing in a circle as in rueda, salsa suelta is danced in lines.
With an emphasis on step routines combined with an imaginative variety of gestures and moves, salsa suelta is an easy going dance style that can be learned as you go. Because there is no partner involved it can be danced:
~ in mixed groups large and small
~ by yourself
~ when you want to break apart in regular salsa dancing
~ as a way to teach salsa steps and salsa choreographies
This DVD features Cuban style salsa suelta inspired from the dance culture of the barrios of Havana. The moves have evolved from a variety of Cuban dance traditions including rumba, orisha dance, son, cha cha cha, mambo, casino, plus the more modern influences of timba and hip hop.
The steps, routines, and changes are initiated by a leader who can direct the action using a variety of techniques including: - calling out the name of the moves - hand gestures - demonstrating with their body
Leaders repeat the steps and moves long enough for followers to catch on. Followers imitate what the leader is doing and change steps when the leader changes.
The Salsa Suelta Candela DVD has six sections:
1- Introduction
2- Salsa Suelta Performance
3- Salsa Suelta Basic Steps
4- Combination Moves Advanced
5- Dancing On and Off the Beat
6- Combination Moves Beginning Auteur : boogaluproductions Tags:salsa cuba dance rumba cuban conga latin rueda orisha | | Cajon-Bata-Rumba - Havana, Cuba - 69 sec Clip of the Boogalu Productions DVD "Rumbambeo"

The chorus "U Laka Laka La" was on everyone's lips in Carnaval La Habana 2003, a call to dance, celebrate, and let it all hang out.
2003 was the 180th year anniversary of Carnaval La Habana, a spectacular festival that incorporates an extrordinary array of Cuba's diverse cultural traditions. For an entire week the city's Malecon seafront drive was awash with hot rhythms, color, and gyrating bodies, along with the rain showers and spray from the sea. The wind and rain were overwhelming at times, but carnaval prevailed and became its own force of nature, blending with the elements.
Parade groups known as comparsas, dominate carnaval, and are composed of a percussion section playing the conga rhythm, dancers in stunning costumes, and floats. Traditional groups, such as El Alacran (The Scorpion) have distinctive themes rooted in the cultural history of Cuba. Comparsas that have formed in more recent years, such as Los Guaracheros de Regla, rely on innovation and style to capture the public's heart.
Carnaval in Havana is a tropical deluge of color, gyrating hips, and vibrant drumming; the life blood of the Cuban people - a marvel to behold.
