When the Nazis invaded Russia the regular army units were followed by "Einsatgruppen" (Storm Troopers) whose job it was to round up 'undesireables' and summarily execute them. One of the worst places this occurred was a place called Baba Ya, a ravine outside the city of Kiev. Over the course of two days, 10's of 1000's of 'undesirables'(most of them Jews from Kiev) were led to this ravine and machine gunned into pits, as well as the ravine itself. Over the next few months, a permanent camp was built on the site. But there was a problem.
Heydrich, the commander of the Einsatgruppen, reported problems with the 'techniques of extermination. First was the logistics, the use of ammunition and other military resources, were pulling much needed supplies fighting the Russians. Second, even the most hardened of his troops were cracking under the stress of shooting people day after day. Third, the regular army forces were catching wind of what was going on and were becoming agitated at the situation, some cases to the point of mutiny. This was one of the reasons that led to the Wansee Conference in early 1942, led by Heydrich himself. This is where the "Final Solution" was adopted to deal with the 'logistical' problems of extermination. One of the main reasons was to 'put distance' between what was to be done and the population, to 'sanitize' it. The other was to actually help German war production(Turning a negative into a positive).
The main point of dragging you through this(incomplete) history lesson is to point out the Holocaust didn't start with the death camps(using Zyklon B) running at full speed during the entire course of the war, but that they were the inevitable result of policies of the Nazis.
