Make This Summer Count - 30 sec
Make this summer count! Pop star and American Idol(TM) winner Jordin Sparks has teamed with DoSomething.org, the organization that empowers teens to take action in their communities, and Staples, the world's largest office products company, to ask teens to make a difference this summer. As part of Do Something 101, (www.dosomething101.com), teens are encouraged to collect school supplies and drop them off at their nearest Staples store, from now through August 31, to ensure they get into the hands of thousands of deserving kids just in time to head back to school. Jordin Sparks is helping raise awareness for these underserved kids by starring in the public service announcement for the campaign, airing on television and radio stations nationwide. With more than 11 million young people in the United States living below the poverty line, Do Something 101 is an easy way for teens nationwide to get involved. All school supplies will be donated locally to educational and not-for-profit organizations that serve disadvantaged youth. In addition, Staples customers can also get involved by donating $2 at any Staples store location, from now to August 31, with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting local teens in need. Teens who want to make a difference can also go to www.DoSomething101.com for ideas on how to run local school supply drives. Suggestions include teens holding a movie night and "charging" their friends a backpack filled with school supplies as admission. Also, teens could put together a battle of the bands, car washes or carnivals with people donating school supplies at the door. Whether holding a school supply drive at summer camp, during a summer sports league, or at a neighborhood block party, Do Something has tips, resources, and flyers for how to get started and make the most of every teen's summer. Main Street Going Green - 202 sec
Going green hasn't always been economically friendly. The initial cost of developing a more energy efficient building can be 10 percent higher than using standard equipment. But with the recent rise in energy costs that gap is starting to close. The new "green" economics of sustainable building is proving that in the long run, using more energy efficient equipment benefits the bottom line. From an architectural firm in New York's Battery Park, to a car dealership in Michigan, energy-saving technologies are being used to improve the nation's landscape. Traditionally a decidedly un-green environment, car dealerships come with challenges like large showroom windows, giant electric signs and emissions from repair shops. But with sustainable practices like skylights to cut electricity costs, geothermal energy to heat and cool the building and rainwater for the car wash, these companies are making a green commitment while decreasing energy costs. Summer Allergies - Nothing to Sneeze At! - 122 sec
The dog days of summer are here and for many the heat and humidity mean one thing, allergies. With an estimated 40 percent of children and 20 percent of adults suffering from allergies, rates are on the rise. Americans are spending three billion dollars a year on antihistamines, often without knowing which allergies are actually causing their symptoms. Doctors say in-vitro blood tests, the latest generation of allergy tests, can help take the guess work out of diagnosis and treatment. Unlike the skin prick tests of the past, which can take an hour and a half to perform and require up to 150 injections, in-vitro tests, require just one blood sample. Systems like the IMMULITE(r)2000 are then able to test the sample for up to 440 specific allergens and allergy panels. Doctors say this testing method is not only more convenient, efficient and accurate but more comfortable for the patient as well. The tests can be performed in patients over the age of three months. New Technology is Music to People’s Ears - 83 sec
Innovations in Cochlear Implants Improve Hearing for the Profoundly Deaf Approximately 32.5 million American adults report some degree of hearing loss and three out of every 1000 children are born deaf or hard of hearing each year, according to the National Institute of Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. For some, cochlear implants may be the only way to learn and interpret speech and other sounds. Unlike a traditional hearing aid, the cochlear implant does not amplify sound but directly stimulates functioning auditory nerves with electric impulses. Now a new implant system, Maestro, is taking hearing technology to the next level. The system consists of the thinnest and lightest internal implant and an externally worn speech processor, allowing people to hear in “High Definition” for the first time. The implant is also future ready and designed to implement upgrades and enhancements without needing a new device. Produced for Med-El

A New Plan For Workplace Retirement - 98 sec
Congresses Proposes the "Automatic IRA Act" According to the Internal Revenue Service, an estimated 79 million U.S. workers are not participating in a retirement plan in their workplace, despite a recent AARP survey that revealed 76 percent of Americans 50 and older would like one. Through new legislation, "The Automatic IRA Act," Congress proposes a plan that would allow more than 50 million workers to save automatically through payroll deduction. Employees would be automatically enrolled and build savings with contributions from every pay check. Another benefit of the plan, called portability, allows employees to take the savings from employer to employer. To qualify businesses must have at least ten employees and have been in operation for at least two years. For more information, visit: www.aarp.org. Produced for AARP

The Rise of the Economy Car - 83 sec
Four-Cylinder Cars Get a New Rep Once the ugly step child of the car lot, the four-cylinder category now makes up one of the fastest-growing segments of the auto market, according to SmartMoney magazine. As drivers search for money saving alternatives, they are finding the compromise of getting better miles per gallon vs. power and performance easier to make. One example of the changing market is the Cheverolet Malibu. With a choice of four or six-cylinder engines, 80 percent of buyers this month chose the gas saving version, compared to less than 20 percent two years ago. To keep up with the growing trend, manufacturers are equipping these cars with more refined engines and added luxuries, making them viable competition for their higher-end counterparts. IIHS: Federal Bumper Standards Should Apply to Light Trucks - 179 sec
Cars, SUVs, and pickups share the road but they don't share the same standard for bumpers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has petitioned the federal government to regulate the bumpers on light trucks (SUVs, pickups, and vans) just as it regulates those on cars. The same bumper rules should apply to all kinds of passenger vehicles. To meet federal rules, car bumpers must be 16 to 20 inches off the ground and limit the amount of damage that can be sustained in a low-speed crash. The idea is to ensure that the bumpers on colliding cars engage, absorbing most of the energy of the impact and keeping damage away from expensive-to-repair parts like fenders, grilles, headlights, and taillights. Car bumper rules don't apply to light trucks. In fact, it's still legal to sell these vehicles without any bumpers at all. Federal regulators' longstanding thinking is that requiring light trucks to have bumpers would compromise off-road navigation and make it hard to use these vehicles at loading ramps. The Institute counters that putting damage-resistant bumpers on light trucks needn't compromise utility. New SUV-to-car crash test results: A series of low-speed crash tests shows why. The Institute details the results in its petition to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The tests involved 4 midsize SUVs striking the back of a typical midsize car at 10 miles per hour. One of the SUVS — a Ford Explorer — does a better job than 3 others (Hummer H3, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and Mitsubishi Endeavor) of resisting damage in low-speed crashes and minimizing damage to the vehicles with which it collides. The front bumpers on the H3, Grand Cherokee, and Endeavor are so high that they overrode the rear bumpers of the stationary Hyundai Sonatas in the Institute tests. Damage to the Sonatas ranged from $3,891 to $4,737. Even the SUVs sustained more than $1,000 damage each. In contrast, the Explorer sustained less than $1,000 damage in the same front-into-rear test, and it inflicted only about one-third as much damage on the Sonata as the worst performer among the 4 SUVs, the H3. WASHINGTON, D.C., June 17, 2008 - The Clean and Safe Energy Coalition (CASEnergy Coalition) today released a new white paper titled, Job Creation in the Nuclear Renaissance that catalogues the potential for tens of thousands of American jobs in the nuclear energy industry in the next decade. The white paper examines the job growth potential for existing and future nuclear power plants and finds that nuclear plants are a boon to local economies. Altogether, 12,000 to 21,000 new jobs will be added to the U.S. market if some 30 reactors currently planned for construction are built. These are long-term jobs that would exist throughout the operation of the reactor, promising decades of employment. Produced for The Clean and Safe Energy Coalition

I Spy, Automotive Paparazzi on the Rise - 80 sec
With Photographers at Their Heels, Automakers Get Creative to Keep New Cars Under Wraps From Brangelina to Tomkat, celebrities are often followed by paparazzi looking for the money shot. But they aren't the only ones keeping one eye open, cars have stalkers too. Called "auto spies", these cameramen try to catch never-before-seen cars, for magazines like Road and Track and Car and Driver, before they debut at international auto shows. To prevent photos of new cars leaking to the press, automakers often use off-limits facilities around the world to do their preliminary testing. When the car is ready for its real world road test, manufacturers like General Motors, bring in a camouflage engineer. Using different design tricks, the engineer's goal is to disguise a pre-production car. First, the car is covered with plastic mesh and then the headlamps are squared off to change the overall shape, giving it a temporary facelift. The goal is to make the public think the car is a different make and model than it actually is. So when it's time for the big debut, it's the first time anyone takes a picture. Renovando Para Su Futuro - 108 sec
The 3,000 Mile Oil Change Myth - 137 sec
Everyone knows you need to change your cars’ oil every 3,000 miles, right? Well, maybe not. The traditional oil change recommendation was based on decades-old engine and oil technologies. Today’s engines are built using advanced technology, reducing or eliminating contaminants and increasing the recommended time between oil changes. New in-vehicle technologies, like GM Oil Life System, can reduce the frequency between oil changes by calculating each engine’s oil “life.” The system is a sophisticated technology that determines the optimum oil change interval for each vehicle, based upon how individual drivers have used it. This can add up to two or three less oil changes a year, saving more than 100 million gallons of oil annually. Less motor oil consumed helps to reduce environmental impact and saves drivers money. Safe Kids Buckle Up Program Hits Major Milestone - 96 sec
Car crashes are the leading cause of death among children ages three to 14, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Half of the children who die in crashes are completely unrestrained. Safe Kids Buckle Up, the child passenger safety program of Safe Kids USA, provides child seat inspection and hands-on training for parents and caregivers across the country. Hitting a major milestone this year, the millionth seat was checked in Los Angeles, coinciding with car seat checkups around the country. Safe Kids has state and local coalitions and chapters across the country and has distributed approximately 365,000 seats to families in need. Since the first seat was checked over a decade ago, statistics from the NHTSA show a 25 percent drop in fatalities for children under the age of five, saving the lives of 3,800 children.
