ABOUT THIS INTERVIEW, THE VIDEO and THE SONG:
This chat with Paul McCartney appears in the program 'All My Loving - A Film of Pop Music,' directed by Tony Palmer.
At the time of it's airing, this 1968 BBC documentary was both highly-acclaimed and controversial. It captured the changing attitudes of the late sixties by mixing graphic news footage of police brutality and the vietnam war with the rock music of the times. Heavily interspersed throughout are interviews with many of 1968's more influencial rock stars.
Also appearing in this made-for-TV film were Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Burdon and others. Tony Palmer spoke
with Paul in an interview that was filmed on May 23rd 1968. The documentary was telecast on BBC television on
November 3rd.
As the interview segment begins, the film has drawn a comparison between the growing seriousness of rock 'n' roll and other styles of music which in the past had been taken more seriously, such as opera and the classics.

John Lennon also appears making his quip on what 'level' the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi was on. Clearly, John is ready for change. Sexy Sadie indeed.
Close to forty new compositions had emerged in Rishikesh, India - a little more than half of which would be laid down
in very rough form at Kinfauns, George Harrison's home in Esher. Known widely as The Escher Demos, they are an absolute must for Beatles fans.
These songs, of course, would make their official debut on their double album titled, 'The Beatles'. Or as it became
known, 'The White Album'. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios and Trident Studios 30 May 1968 -- 14 October 1968.

A month before a studio version of "Helter Skelter" was taped, a short acoustic version was filmed in between
rehearsal takes of "Blackbird". It was filmed in colour by Tony Bramwell, and was intended for use as an Apple promo.
This acoustic version was aired on Dutch television's "Vara's Puntje" on September 27, 1968.

His street community friends come to his aid at his trial to show their support and respect for their "colleague".
This style of discourse had a long tradition in black american culture, combining elements of African story telling with the rhyming techniques of street corner one-upmanship, know as "Playing the Dozens" and of "Jail Toasts" such as the "Titanic" and "Doriella Du Fontaine" and "The Fall" and "Honky Tonk Bud" and "The Signifying Monkey"and "Death Row".
It's an integral piece of African American Folklore that every fan of hip hop today should see and hear.
If you like Rudy Ray Moore, Dolomite, Richard Pryor, Chris Rock, Flip Wilson - the list goes on - you'll dig this.

During early summer of 1967, Paul McCartney had admitted to an inquiring reporter that he had used LSD. This became a controversial issue, and a springboard for discussing the responsibilities of celebrities and journalists. The following segment was filmed on June 19th 1967 as a British TV-news interview, and was broadcast in Britain later that evening.
Paul had just turned 25 the previous day. 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' had only been newly released just two weeks prior to this interview. So this was a potentially risky decision on Paul's part to make this public announcement now.
The Stones were being busted left and right, Jimi Hendrix had made his gigantic presence known in London and forever more at Monterey, and the Who were just about to crash into the US conscience at that same event. Big Year 1967.

Beatle Side note: This interview is also noted in the Beatles Anthology and, according to inside recollection of the reaction to Paul's surprise admission, both John and George were piqued at this sudden attention to their private lives and LSD. Especially since they had been far more experimental in their 'testing' of its effects, and were perfectly willing to keep it private up to this point.
