| Siegfried's Rhine Journey - Twilight of the Gods - 565 sec Siegfrieds Rheinfahrt - Götterdämmerung - Wagner
Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau conducts the "hervorragendes" Deutsches Symphonie Orchestra Berlin. Sorry about the abrupt ending. It is too long and I had to cut somewhere.
Exactly 50 years ago I did my own Rhine journey. A school friend and I cycled through Belgium to Cologne and thence all the way to Switzerland at Schaffhausen, then Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux, Lausanne. Don't ask how we got home!
Thus I feel qualified to upload this piece ... if not musically, then because we visited every castle on route - and even stayed in one or two (Bacharach, Ehrenbreitstein)! Marvellous! In an English country garden?
I'll tell you now of some I know
And those I'll miss I hope you'll pardon
Daffodils, heart's ease and flox
Meadowsweet and lilly stalks
Gentain, lupine and tall hollihocks
Roses, foxgloves, snowdrops, forget-me-nots
In an English country garden.
How many insects find their home
In an English country garden?
I'll tell you now of some I know
Those I miss I hope you'll pardon
Dragonflies, moths and bees
Spiders falling from the trees
Butterflies sway in the mild gentle breeze
There are hedgehogs that roam
And little gnomes
In an English country garden.
How many songbirds make their nests
In an English country garden?
I'll tell you now of some I know
Those I miss I hope you'll pardon
Bobolink, coo cooing doves
Blackbirds and the whirlwind thrush
Bluebird, lark, pigeon, nightingale
We all smile in the spring
When the birds all start to sing

Largo al Factotum - Barber of Seville (1974)
In these arias I am a fan of Nicolae Herlea's thrilling voice and Tito Gobbi's characterisations. But Sherrill Milnes runs them close on both counts (especially his brilliant 1978 live performance of "Si Puo" uploaded by orestis23).
My video here is for two main reasons: The studio sound quality is good and I have been able to put sub-titles (my Italian is very weak). Mathilde Wesendonck (or Wesendonk) was the wife of Wagner's patron in the mid 1850s. His infatuation with her led to the breakdown of his first marriage. He set 5 of her poems to music.
One comment on the web opines that these renditions by Julia Varady, are second only to Janet Baker's reading with Adrian Boult in the 1960s. Auteur : Glenmed Tags: Julia Varady Wagner Wesendonk Glenmed | | Emma Johnson: Mozart Clarinet Concerto - 502 sec Mozart Clarinet Concerto K.622.#3

We were bowled over recently by a truly wonderful performance of this at the magnificent Leeds Town Hall. This upload of the "Offertorio" is dedicated to those musicians from various parts of the country (including 3 different choirs on stage at the same time) that gave the packed house so much pleasure.

Apologies for the puerile backwards "R". I know it is the "YA" phoneme.
If any kind person can give me the words in Russian I'll put them here.
Alone! alone again!
Lonely as always.
It's passing me by, my young life,
in long, dark loneliness.
My heart is heavy and my mind so sad,
Here sitting in this gilded cage.
There stands a soldier on the Volga bank,
He's there on watch for Fatherland.
So dark the night, alone, remote,
No bright'ning moon, no star.
Motionless the Steppes lie still.
Now rises to his eye a tear,
Such gnawing at his heart he feels.
When left alone man pleads and asks:
Have you up there forgotten me?
I have a heart that longs for love.
With you in heaven are angels many!

the month, at Carnegie Hall in New York City, Paul Robeson at the age of 60 performed this version of his most famous song.
Swanee River - This is a much older recording and contains some recording imperfections.
The achievements of Paul Robeson are astounding. Apart from his magnificent voice, he was a high-level athlete and had a university degree in law; he was an exceptional public speaker, a Shakespearean actor and spoke several languages. Some going for the son of a slave and when prejudice and segregation made any such achievements difficult. Guten Abend, gute Nacht,
Mit Rosen bedacht,
Mit Näglein besteckt,
Schlupf unter die Deck':
Morgen früh, wenn Gott will,
Wirst du wieder geweckt.
Guten Abend, gut Nacht,
Von Englein bewacht,
Die zeigen im Traum
Dir Christkindleins Baum:
Schlaf nun selig und süß,
Schau im Traum's Paradies.
I know this is not a literal translation ... but can you really say good evening to a baby?!
Lovely evening, lovely night,
Sweet roses above you,
And there all around you,
You're comfy and warm:
God willing, tomorrow
I'll wake you again.
Lovely evening, lovely night,
The angels will guard you,
In your dream they will show you
The tree of Christ child:
Sleep now in sweet bliss,
And of paradise dream. Auteur : Glenmed Tags: Brahms Lullaby Victoria de los Angeles | | Richard Harris : King Arthur "Camelot" - 254 sec How to handle a woman

La damnation de Faust - Hector Berlioz Auteur : Glenmed Tags: D'Amour l'Ardente Flamme Shirley Verrett Berlioz Glenmed | | Fritz Wunderlich : Ännchen von Tharau - 222 sec In 1636, a young girl (17 years old, named Anna Neander) was getting married to a minister, Johannes Partatius. Simon Dach, a baroque poet who was born in Memel, (1605-1659), was invited to the wedding. He fell in love with Anna Neander and wrote a poem about her: "Ännchen von Tharau."
In 1912 a statue of Ännchen von Tharau was erected in honour of the poet, Simon Dach in Memel (or Klaipeda in present day Lithuania). It got lost (destroyed) during the 1st world war. In 1989 members of the "Ännchen von Tharau Verein" (Society), founded by "vertriebenen Memelländern", (Germans who were driven out of the Memelland) and exiled Lithuanians, erected the new statue of Ännchen von Tharau.
The original poem was written in Plattdeutsch. These were later put into Hochdeutsch by Johann Gottfied Herder in 1778.
Having studied German (including Old and Middle High German) at University in the 1960s I have some fascination with this so I append the original words ... The English words subtitled onto the video are largely those of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
