| Speak To Me Of Lovely Things - 85 sec
This is an original poem, one of a few I plan to make video recordings of. I am excited about this new way to share poetry, which is one of my great loves. I try to write empowering, hopeful, inspiring poetry. That's no small feat but, like I said, I try.
I wrote this poem while on vacation in Jamaica. We'd been there for about a week, having fun and doing a service project to create much needed libraries that I was super excited about. It was going well and I was on Cloud Nine, feeling good about doing good in the world, when one of our group joined us and said, "I feel like I need to tell you that there's been a school shooting back in the states. Ten people were killed." .... This school shooting was not in our state. We didn't know anyone affected. We couldn't do anything about it. I remember thinking, "Really? You needed to tell me that?"
Too often we inundate each other with bad news, news about which we can do nothing. We add to our own misery about situations we are helpless to do anything about. Now I am all about working for justice and doing service and being educated about the world around us but subjecting yourself to bad news all the time does nothing to ease the suffering in the world. Indeed, I would argue that the world benefits from our happiness, which fosters hope and optimism. These are much more fertile ground for making change. Constant bad news, on the other hand, can lead to feelings of helplessness, to apathy, to shutting down. So, instead, I suggest that we foster encouraging conversations! After all, what is "encouragement" but "to give courage". Yes, there is bad in the world but there is beauty too. Choosing to place our attention on the beautiful increases the chances that that is what we will foster, and that, when faced with the badness, we have the reserves, the strength and the wherewithal, to weather it.
So this is the poem I wrote about that.
Speak To Me Of Lovely Things:
Speak to me of lovely things
of folks inspired
and art
and Spring.
Use your words to fill me
with the Good news!
Share aloud your dreams,
your hopes,
yours aspirations,
inspirations...
Tell me what you like
about the current situation...
Recount for me an anecdote of joy.
I want to hear the stories
of your random acts of kindness
of the things that make you proud
or made you smile along the way.
I want to hear the songs you sing
when you sing other's praises,
or how grateful that you are,
because someone made your day.
Wrap me in the warmth
of your cheerful disposition
Grant me needed respite
from the darkness that is near
For you and I together
shape reality's oasis
and you and I together
make it dear.

This was the first video we shot in our guerilla hooping video shoot at the Arboretum. It is full of crazy mistakes and I was not going to post it. The background is lovely though and I love the song and tonight, in my class, I dropped my hoop and one of my students remarked that she found that reassuring. It reminded me that, to new hoopers, it can often look like more experienced hoopers never make mistakes. That can make people feel frustrated with their own efforts when, in reality, every hooper I know drops a hoop sometimes. In this video, I make at least two colossal drops. More than that, I don't think my dancing is the best. It was the first video of the day and I was self-conscious. So I'll probably shoot it over one day but, for now, I'm going to share it anyway. What the heck? I love some parts of it, especially near the end. Hopefully the next one will be better.

My friend Pam and I rescued this little kitten from the road when were on the way to the Jack Johnson concert. It's about five weeks old and covered with fleas. Too young to tell if it's a male or a female. Too young to use flea control. But who needs it? When I sat Mulder on the couch next to this little kitten he immediately started preening him, picking off fleas, snapping them in half and going back for more. He even gently removes the boogers in the corners of the little kitty's eyes sometimes. It's just as sweet as it can be.

This vid is too dark but I wanted to share it anyway. I am concentrating on my waist hooping, which is the core of all hoop dance. It's challenging and fun. I'm learning a lot by trying to stay in this area and dance instead of bursting out into tricks. We'll see how I progress. Plus, this song makes me happy.

For Nora - This is a basic tutorial for hooping on the hands. If you find yourself getting bruises on the back of the hands, I recommend using fingerless gloves (weight-lifting gloves, biking gloves and batting gloves all work well) to provide a little cushion to the backs of the hands while your technique improves and your skin toughens up. I also recommend using Arnica lotion on the bruises to help them heal faster. Best of luck!

For Ancelyn and Sue. This is a video tutorial of how to do isolations as well as a number of isolation variations. I recommend using a light weight hoop when you first start learning these isolations. Heavy hoops can lead to pulled muscles and slow progress.
In this video, Mulder, my bird, decided he wanted to help me teach. He was quite vocal about it. Icky, though, sleeps through it all on the little loveseat next to Mulder's cage. Such a silly animal family I have.

For Terri - This is a little tutorial about walking while hooping. Check out my cat AGAIN! He is in every video! In this one, Icky seems to realize that I'm directing my attention to the camera. He comes up and looks right into the camera at about 6:30. He is such a smart cat. And totally fearless.
I emphasize going front/back, front/back or side/side, side/side a lot. I wish I had commented that soon you will find yourself at a place where you are pushing and pulling in all directions and in varying degrees. You will develop nuance. These ideas just give you a taste of some of the possibilities. You'll discover the places in between, new and different ways to interact with the hoop, to influence the rotation from every side. You will find your center. Just stick with it. It's only a matter of time.

So many things are synched in really cool ways,like when he steps on my arm right when Robert Preston asks, "May I have this dance?" and Julie Andrews responds, "Why Certainly!" And the way he won't step up, when Preston is being fussy about steps too. So funny. The song is You and Me from the film Victor/Victoria sung by Robert Preston and Julie Andrews. I love that movie. It's one of my favorites. Mulder's too.

This was my first try at a Video Christmas card. It's full of mistakes (that big "Ding!" is not a bell but me hitting the ceiling fan) but I like it anyway. I like the joy in it. I just wish I could have kept that silly hat on!?!
I love this song. It's from the musical Subways are for Sleeping but I had it on a Christmas album called The Little Drummer Boy by Living Voices when I was a young girl. I used to sing the songs at the top of my lungs while rollerskating in my basement when I was 10. It has a special place in my heart.
