Roger Nusic "Can I Come In And See You?" - 246 sec
Roger Nusic is a superstar in the truest sense of the word. Unhindered by self-consciousness, Nusic's music transcends the concepts U already have about rock & roll. U may not know why U like it, but U will like it, and those catchy songs will B running threw Ur head every second, every minute, every hour.

Screaming Tress "Butterfly" - 205 sec
Following the Dust tour, Screaming Trees took another hiatus, with Lanegan beginning work on his third solo album, Scraps At Midnight, which was released in 1998. The Screaming Trees headed back into the studio in 1999 and recorded several songs including "Ash Grey Sunday" and shopped them around to labels but nobody was interested. They played a few surprise shows in early 2000 to attempt again to catch a label's interest but they were unsuccessful and following a June 25, 2000, concert to celebrate the opening of Seattle's Experience Music Project, the group unsurprisingly announced their official breakup.

Mudhoney "Into the Drink Sub-Pop Records - 126 sec
Mudhoney is a grunge band that formed in Seattle, Washington in 1988. They have been an inspiration and influence on many grunge and alternative rock musicians, most notably Kurt Cobain of Nirvana. Mudhoney's career is chronicled in Our Band Could Be Your Life by Michael Azerrad, a study of several important American underground rock groups.

Sebadoh "Ocean" Sub-Pop Records - 189 sec
Lou Barlow was the bass player for alternative rock band Dinosaur Jr in the late 1980s. While both Barlow and leader J Mascis wrote songs, Mascis' material dominated the group's output because Barlow was intimidated by the guitarist's songwriting efforts.[1] Barlow spent progressively more time recording his own songs at home. Barlow and Gaffney released the Weed Forestin' cassette in 1987 on Homestead Records under the name Sebadoh, which was a nonsense word Barlow often muttered in his recordings.[2]. Both Barlow and Gaffney contributed songs to 1988's The Freed Man cassette. Homestead Records head Gerard Cosloy heard the cassette release of The Freed Man and released it as a full-length album on Homestead in 1989. Soon after the cassette's release Barlow was kicked out of Dinosaur Jr. Over time Sebadoh's releases became a way for Barlow to address the issues of control that manifested as the tension in and his ejection from Dinosaur Jr; Barlow said "I got a lot of hatred out just by writing those songs."[3] Jason Loewenstein joined in summer 1989, the first release that he played on being the "Gimme Indie Rock" single in 1991. Only ten 'band' shows were performed throughout Western Mass, Boston, and New York over the period 1989-1990 before third album, the appropriately-named Sebadoh III was released. After touring with fIREHOSE in 1991, they signed to Sub Pop (Domino in the UK and City Slang in Germany) in 1992, and released the two EPs Rocking the Forest and Sebadoh vs. Helmet released just two months apart. These EPs had their track listings truncated and shuffled around and made into the American full-length release Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock. Their fourth full length album Bubble and Scrape was recorded Summer/Fall 1992 and released in April 1993, which sold 10,000 in its first week of release - confirming that the band were now established indie rock favourites. Concert at Webster Hall in New York City, 2007 Concert at Webster Hall in New York City, 2007 Sebadoh III (1991), helped draw further attention to Sebadoh as proponents of the lo-fi movement. Following 1993's Bubble and Scrape, however, Gaffney left the band. His replacement, Bob Fay, appeared on the band's most acclaimed and consistent effort, 1994's Bakesale, which saw the emergence of the songwriting talents of multi-instrumentalist Jason Loewenstein, and the follow-up Harmacy in 1996. Fay was fired before the sessions for The Sebadoh (1999) and replaced by Russ Pollard, a friend of Loewenstein's from Louisville. Following the tour to promote this album, the band went on hiatus, with Barlow concentrating on his other project, the Folk Implosion, and Loewenstein working on material for his debut solo album At Sixes and Sevens, released in 2002. The two reunited to play concerts in late 2003 and the spring of 2004. In March of 2007, the "Sebadoh Classic" lineup of Barlow, Gaffney and Loewenstein went on tour together for the first time in 14 years. This tour continues into 2008, and in May will featuree a live performance of 1993's Bubble and Scrape in its entirety as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties-curated Don't Look Back series at London's Koko venue.

Screaming Trees "All I Know" Epic Records - 234 sec
Brothers Van Conner and Gary Lee Conner formed Screaming Trees with Mark Lanegan in 1985. Lanegan and the Conners grew up in Ellensburg, Washington, a small college town some 90 miles from Seattle. The trio believed themselves to be the only people in their high school who listened to punk, garage rock, and independent music, so they gravitated toward each other. After falling out with the Conners before either completed school, Lanegan contacted Van Conner several years later. By that point, Van had a band with a singer named Mark Pickerel; the pair had recently kicked Lee Conner out of the band, so they invited Lanegan to sit in on drums. Eventually, Lee rejoined the group, and they settled on a lineup that featured Lee on guitar, Van on bass, Lanegan on vocals, and Pickerel on drums.

Seaweed "Kid Candy" - 225 sec
Seaweed is a band from Tacoma, Washington who were active throughout the 1990s. Their style of music is a combination of punk rock and grunge, mostly due to its 'dirty' sound. In their early days, Seaweed was signed to Washington's Sub Pop, but later released albums on Hollywood Records and Merge Records. Seaweed's contemporaries during the time of their existence included Mudhoney, Samiam, Jawbreaker and tour mates Superchunk and Quicksand. The band toured extensively in the United States with Green Day, Candlebox and Bad Religion as well as overseas, including shows in Brazil with Garage Fuzz. They were well-known for their cover of Fleetwood Mac's Go Your Own Way, which appeared in the movie Clerks

Jale "Not Happy" - 167 sec
Jale was formed by four art school students in 1993: guitarist Jennifer Pierce, who had earlier sung backup on the album Smeared by Sloan; drummer Alyson MacLeod; bassist Laura Stein; and guitarist Eve Hartling. The band's name was formed from the first letters of the members' first names. Local legend had it that the band formed after all four members attended a concert by Seattle band Velocity Girl; whether that was true or not, Jale's early recordings resembled that band's work. Chris Murphy of Sloan introduced Pierce and MacLeod, and later lent equipment to the fledgling band and booked them for opening slots at Sloan concerts. Early singles released on Halifax independent record labels drew the attention of American label Sub Pop Records, and Jale became the second Canadian band (after Eric's Trip) to be signed to the Seattle label.

Love Battery "Out Of Focus" - 235 sec
For the most part Love Battery was an unusual group in the early 90's Seattle music scene. Blending intense swirling psychedelic guitar work, pulsating rhythms, driving beats and heartfelt vocals derived from '60s garage/psych, '70s punk rock, '80s post punk and '90s grunge, their music was significantly more complex than most of the music associated with that era.

Nirvana "Smells Like Teen Spirit" Live & Sold Out Version - 205 sec
Cobain and Novoselic met in 1985. Both were fans of The Melvins, and often frequented the band's practice space. After a couple of false starts at forming their own band, the duo recruited drummer Aaron Burckhard, creating the first incarnation of what would eventually become Nirvana. Cobain later described the sound of the band when they first started as "a Gang of Four and Scratch Acid ripoff."[3] Within a few months, Burckhard was fired from the band. He was temporarily replaced by Dale Crover of the Melvins, who played on the band's first demos. Dave Foster then began a brief tenure as the band's drummer.

The Gits "Seaweed" - 153 sec
Following the death of Mia Zapata and posthumous completion of Enter: The Conquering Chicken, several projects featuring ex-members of the Gits were formed. First were the Dancing French Liberals of '48 which featured all of the remaining Gits as well as longtime friend and guitarist Julian Gibson (ex-DC Beggars). Their music was, as expected, much in the vein of the Gits although with a more hardcore punk attitude. Together the Liberals issued an EP (Scream Clown Scream) and a full length album (Powerline) on the Broken Rekids label before disbanding in the late 90's.

Mudhoney "Let It Slide" - 152 sec
Nirvana may have been the band that put an entire generation in flannel, and Pearl Jam and Soundgarden both sold a lot more records, but Mudhoney were truly the band that made the '90s grunge rock movement possible. Mudhoney were the first real success story for Sub Pop Records; their indie-scene success laid the groundwork for the movement that would (briefly) make Seattle, WA, the new capital of the rock & roll universe; and they took the sweat-soaked and beer-fueled mixture of heavy metal muscle, punk attitude, and garage rock primitivism that would become known as "grunge" to the hipster audience for the first time, who would in turn sell it to a mass audience ready for something new.

Heatmiser "Blackout" - 157 sec
The Portland, OR, band Heatmiser was best known for launching the career of singer/songwriter Elliott Smith, but other members of the group went on to have successful music careers long after Heatmiser's demise. Singer/songwriter/guitarist Neil Gust went on to form the pop/rock band No. 2, while bassist Sam Coomes formed the popular indie pop duo Quasi with his then-wife, Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss. Drummer Tony Lash, who produced some of Heatmiser's material, went on to do production work with a variety of artists, including the Dandy Warhols, Death Cab for Cutie, and the Minders.

Punk unit Seaweed formed in Tacoma, WA, in 1989. Singer Aaron Stauffer, fresh off a stint in the little-known Spook & the Zombies, founded the band with best friend Clint Werner, who assumed guitar duties. After the recruitment of guitarist Wade Neal, bassist John Atkins, and drummer Bob Bulgrien, Seaweed began playing clubs throughout the Pacific Northwest, in 1990 releasing its debut four-song single on Atkins' Leopard Gecko label; "Just a Smirk" followed that same year, and in 1991 the band issued the excellent "Deer Trap" as part of K Records' ongoing International Pop Underground singles series

Huevos Rancheros "Cindy With An S" - 170 sec
uring the first struggling years of its existence, Huevos Rancheros recorded a six-song offering, Rocket to Nowhere, released on both cassette and vinyl. A heavy performing schedule in and around Calgary promoted the EP and began to build the group a sizeable fan base. In 1993, the debut full-length album, Endsville, was recorded under the C/Z label. Huevos Rancheros stepped up their presence in the music world at the same time, with both singles and videos, and exposure throughout Canada and into Europe, Asia, the United States, and other countries.

Elliott Smith "Coming Up Roses" - 193 sec
A native of Portland, OR, Smith began writing and recording his first songs at age 14, later becoming a fixture of the city's thriving music scene; as a member of the band Heatmiser, he debuted in 1993 with the LP Dead Air, issuing his first solo effort Roman Candle on the tiny Cavity Search label a year later. For his 1995 self-titled album, Smith signed with the noted Kill Rock Stars label; Either/Or followed in 1997, around the same time that filmmaker and longtime fan Gus Van Sant requested permission to use the singer's music in his upcoming Good Will Hunting.

The Spinanes "Kid In Candy" - 272 sec
by Richie Unterberger In alternative rock, as in any other genre, it's hard to stand out from a crowded field. When the Spinanes emerged in the early '90s, they got a couple legs up on the competition to be different. Taking the power trio format one stage further, they created a full-bodied rock sound with just two members, guitarist/singer Rebecca Gates and drummer Scott Plouf. They also were one of the first Sub Pop bands that did not subscribe to a grungy metallic sound, although they rocked pretty hard.
