PlusAP Campaign MinuteAP Campaign MinuteThe Associated PressHere's the latest from the campaign trail for Thursday, July 24th: Obama addresses thousands in Berlin; McCain meets with business leaders in Ohio; Obama leading Hispanics; Minneapolis police prepare for convention. This is AP Campaign Minute Barack Obama is emphasizing the need to break down barriers that divide people. In a speech in Berlin today, he told a huge crowd that walls cannot stand between old allies, between rich and poor countries, between races and tribes, natives and immigrants, Christians and Muslims and Jews. It's the latest stop in an overseas trip meant to bolster his foreign policy credentials. John McCain says while he'd love to give a speech in Germany, he'd rather do it as president than as a candidate. McCain is campaigning in Ohio today. After lunching on bratwurst with local business leaders in Columbus, he told reporters he wants to focus on economic issues such as soaring gas and fuel prices. A new national poll suggests Barack Obama has opened a big lead over John McCain among Hispanic voters. The survey by the Pew Hispanic Center shows 66 percent of registered Hispanic voters polled supported the Democrat compared to 23 percent for his Republican rival. Minneapolis and St. Paul police are hoping to keep the peace during this summer's Republican National Convention. Certain officers have been asked to keep open lines of communication with activist leaders at the convention -- in an attempt to increase understanding, and reduce any possible tensions during the convention. ___ ___, The Associated Press, with AP Campaign Minute.

Robert Williams was convicted last month of attempted murder, rape, kidnapping and arson. (July 24)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] The man convicted of raping and torturing a Columbia University student will spend the rest of his life behind bars.On Thursday a New York state supreme court judge sentenced Robert Williams to 422 years in prison.A jury found him guilty of several charges ranging from arson to attempted murder last month. In the spring of 2007...Williams forced his way into the graduate student's apartment and tortured her for 19 hours straight. He gagged her with duct tape...burned her with boiling water...and ordered her to gouge her own eyes out with a pair of scissors-- all before setting her apartment on fire. She escaped by using the flames to burn through some of her restraints.Through it all...the victim managed to memorize virtually every distinguishing feature of her attacker including his scars and gold tooth. She identified Williams as the man who violated her from the witness stand. An attorney for Williams has argued that his client is mentally ill and needs psychiatric help. The defense is planning an appeal.

PlusParents of Beaten NY College Student Speak OutParents of Beaten NY College Student Speak OutThe Associated PressThe parents of a college student who was beaten into a coma say they want his suspected assailant to return to the U.S. to face justice. Authorities say the suspect, Miladin Kovacevic, fled to Serbia while out on bail. (July 24)((New York)) A parent's nightmare: Marlene and Richard Steinhauer's only child lies in a coma - while one of the men allegedly responsible for putting him there appears out of the reach of justice. ((Marlene Steinhauer, Mother)) "((sobbing)) It's very difficult to see my son and the quality of his life cut short," Their son Bryan Steinhauer was a magna cum laude senior at State University of New York at Binghamton. He had already landed a job as an accountant, when he was beaten into a coma by three men in May. "...repeatedly kicked in the head over and over while he lay unconscious on the floor bleeding, he was so bloodied that even his only roommate could not recognize him being carried out." It's unclear why the 130 pound student was assaulted in a bar. But a grand jury is charging three men, including 6 foot 9 inches tall Serbian basketball player Miladin Kovacevic ( koh-VAH'-cheh-vitch) in the vicious assault. Kovacevic managed to slip out of the country, and now Serbia is refusing to extradite him, to the great frustration of his mother, a retired public schoolteacher, and his father, a systems analyst. Their lawyer says justice is being cheated. "He's suffering greatly, we just understand he's signed a contract to play basketball in Serbia." Bryan Steinhauer is slowly coming into his consciousness, but it's unclear if he will fully recover. "There's times where he seems to get a little more consciousness of his situation, he starts yelling and screaming, it's like a dagger to your heart." Serbian officials say it is against the law in that country to extradite citizens. Ted Shaffrey, The Associated Press, New York
