Hold Back - Allison Crowe - 246 sec
From Allison Crowe's newest album, "Little Light", comes this song - "Hold Back". "I would chew my arm off to sing like Allison," says West Virginia, Mountain Stage-loving music blogger Muruch. "Though I guess that would make it difficult to shred a piano like she does, which seems to be half the fun" - referencing, respectively, "Hold Back" ~ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/07HoldBackAllisonCrowe128.mp3 and "the fervent, mesmeric, piano-hammering extended version of 'Disease' " ~ http://www.allisoncrowe.com/03DiseaseAllisonCrowe128.mp3 both songs on Crowe's newest CD. "She is reminiscent of some of the great women vocalists who shaped rock music in the late '60s and early '70s. Allison's emotional delivery is unique in today's music," is how music industry veteran, and manager to Bif Naked, Peter Karroll's earlier framed it. Images accompanying this vid are almost all shot by Canadian photographer and musician Billie Woods. The image of Allison onstage in New York City (at the piano on darkened stage) is by Ben Strothmann. Pics of Allison as a child are courtesy the Crowe family photo album. "Ever wonder what it would have been like to listen to a gifted singer/songwriter from Saskatchewan in a small, intimate hall before she became Joni Mitchell? Don't fret. There's no need to turn back the clock. Check out Allison Crowe." ~ Robert Reid, The Record (Canada)

Independence Day (Ani DiFranco) - Allison Crowe live - 250 sec
Inspired by a post - "Mothers of the Folkworld" - on boyhowdy's 'Cover Lay Down' blog - http://coverlaydown.blogspot.com/2008/05/mothers-of-folkworld-suzanne-vega-ani.html a rare bootleg video is found here... Allison Crowe, on her first national headling tour across her home country of Canada. Video footage shot when only a few knew they were witnessing a member of the international aristocracy of great talent. These years on, Allison Crowe has continued to follow the independent path of Righteous Babe Ani DiFranco. DiFranco and her manager Scot Fisher have been guiding lights to Crowe and her team at Rubenesque Records Ltd. "If you are disgustingly sincere and terribly diligent, there are ways for any serious artist to operate outside the corporate structure." ~ Ani DiFranco Here be Allison performing Ani's "Independence Day" live at Roca Jack's coffeehouse, Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. This song has been captured, in higher fidelity, on the album "Live at Wood Hall". (Other Ani songs in Allison's repertoire include "32 Flavors" and "Both Hands".) As with the vids of Allison covering Pearl Jam in Seattle, 2001 - may the honesty of this performance transcend the technical limitations of recording devices. Happy Mother's Day!

Disease - Allison Crowe live (08/03/08) - 507 sec
Allison Crowe's song, "Disease", is stimulating social commentary. (Serving to inspire an online discussion of 'great art' and the nature of its creation - http://www.fuckdecaf.org/2004/11/great-art.html#comments ) While unchanged lyrically, the song has grown more steeled musically through its life and release. This live recording, on Allison's newest album, "Little Light", is distinct from the earlier version heard on "Live at Wood Hall". "To sing is to love and affirm, to fly and soar, to coast into the hearts of the people who listen, to tell them that life is to live, that love is there, that nothing is a promise, but that beauty exists, and must be hunted for and found," wrote Joan Baez, musician and plenty more, when she was near the same age Allison Crowe is now. 't'is high purpose, evermore today, "as we replace marble with plastic". Here is the song, captured in its raging glory, serendipitously on International Women's Day, March 8, 2008, also a fun date of Turtle Recording Studios 20th Anniversary Party in White Rock, B.C., Canada - by Engineer and Producer, Turtle's Larry Anschell (Pearl Jam, Sarah McLachlan, Bif Naked+) with Brad Graham Co-Engineer. Play it loud! You can even hear Allison stomping her feet on this recording. Enjoy ( : NB there is no video footage of this performance - the still photo is of song lyrics for Disease in Allison's handwritten journal.

A Case of You (Joni Mitchell) - Allison Crowe live - 309 sec
For six weeks, in the summer of 2005, Canada's public broadcasters were locked out of the CBC, Canada's public radio and television. "You're the host of a show called 'Sounds Like Canada' and discover you're about to have an extended summer hiatus. What do you do? If you're Shelagh Rogers, you hop in a minivan and head across Canada to talk to Canadians. Shelagh brings together some of the coolest people she met on the road. Shelagh's Caravan began in Victoria, BC, and Allison Crowe was the first singer/songwriter to be part of the Caravan. The performer joins Shelagh to talk about her own recent cross-country tour and her European debut next month." And, Allison performed, for the very first time, Joni Mitchell's A Case of You. "I drew a map of Canada, oh Canada..." Since first performing the song on SLC, Allison has recorded it for her new album, This Little Bird, released in October 2006. "Crowe gets to the heart of the mystical, intoxicating song. 'You're In My Blood Like Holy Wine' has rarely been a line better delivered." ~ Anna Maria Stjärnell, Luna Kafé (Sweden) " Another fine entry in the Joni Covers pantheon for Allison, who first wowed us with her electrifying take on River. This time 'round she picks another Blue selection and imbues it with her sensitive singing and playing. From her 2006 release 'This Little Bird', all of which is as tasty as this track." ~ Bob Muller, Curator of Cover Songs @ JoniMitchell.com (USA) "Ranging from pure and angelic to sultry and confessional, Crowe excels at all levels. The cover of the Joni Mitchell classic, A Case of You, demonstrates this perfectly. The song covers Crowe's full range -- both tonally and emotionally -- from strident confidence in the strength of love down to low groaning of self doubt and despair." ~ Trevor Raggatt, Wears the Trousers (UK) "I am probably the only person in the world that wasn't in love with Joni Mitchell's 'A Case of You'. Which is weird since I like most of Joni's other songs, but I just never got the mass appeal of this one song of hers. And the covers, oy. Like 'Hallelujah', it's covered far too often by singers who really have no business singing it. Until now. Yes, I realize that Allison could sing the alphabet and I'd think it was a masterpiece, but still. Her emotive singing style made this song finally click with me, and now I'm like everyone else who loves it." ~ Muruch (USA)

Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana) - Allison Crowe (live) - 270 sec
In Spring 2001, Allison Crowe and her band played outdoors in the snow atop Whistler Mountain, B.C. As an encore song, Allison performed Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" - a song that means so much to many coming of age in the '90s. The revolution rolls on. Kurt Cobain and his bandmates Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl and the vital grunge scene of the Pacific Northwest inspired Allison Crowe's immersion in rock following her classical and jazz roots. There's no video footage of this alpine show - the still image is from a design by rock poster legend Bob Masse.

Silence - Allison Crowe - 359 sec
From Allison Crowe's newest album, "This Little Bird", comes "Silence". ...like a song that Yvonne (Madeleine LeBeau) could have played in Rick's Cafe, in the film classic Casablanca. Maybe before Paul Henreid as Victor Laszlo asks the orchestra to play "La Marseillaise". Of course, following a nod from Rick (Humphrey Bogart), the band does, indeed, rally to the Marseillaise - France's national anthem. Here now, is a tune from Ce Petit Oiseau (This Little Bird).

Raining in Baltimore (Counting Crows) - Allison Crowe (live) - 299 sec
Musician Allison Crowe first began performing for audiences, earning hometown glory, in 1996. Up and down Vancouver Island, Canada, Crowe played in coffee-houses and clubs from the time she was 15 years old. While building her catalogue of more than 100 original songs, Allison Crowe's first "cover" was of the Counting Crows' song "Raining in Baltimore". (Her early, solo and band repertoire, includes diverse choices - Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah", Radiohead's "Creep" along with songs of Pearl Jam, Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco and others. People appreciate Crowe's passionate interpretations and she still loves to cover these songs.) Counting Crows' lead vocalist and writer, Adam Duritz, inspired the young Canadian to become a singer-songwriter. In 1994, for her debut full-length album, "Secrets", Crowe recorded "Raining in Baltimore". The version heard here is a live recording from Allison Crowe's "Secrets" tour of that same year.

Allison Crowe counts Counting Crows among her favourite bands. Adam Duritz and co. have inspired the independent singer-songwriter from her start on the concert stage. The first Crows song Crowe performed on-stage in her teens was Raining in Baltimore. (A popular recording of this song is heard on her "Secrets" album.) Another live favourite is this song, A Murder of One (from the "Live at Wood Hall" set). Imagine (John Lennon) - Allison Crowe + TopPun peace signs - 209 sec
In January 2004, in concert, Allison led the assembled musicians in a group-closer ~ John Lennon's "Imagine". In April 2004, she headined a concert to cap Earth Week activities in Victoria, the capital city of her birth-province of British Columbia, Canada. The "Goolden Gala" (in a gorgeous, old, converted 800-seat church) was to "Celebrate Peace, Earth and Justice". Also to that end, Allison made this recording. Peace signs are from TopPun.com - the groovy site of Dan Rutt. In September 2007, Allison Crowe, joined with musicians, poets, painters, dramatists and all people who came together to celebrate the "John Lennon Northern Lights Festival" in Durness, in Highlands of Scotland. Northern Lights - Allison Crowe song w. David Cartier images - 239 sec
Canadian indie singer-songwriter Allison Crowe performed this song at the 'John Lennon Northern Lights Festival' in Durness, Scotland (September 28 - 30, 2007). Yukon-based David Cartier, Sr. shares his beautiful images of the Aurora Borealis on flickr @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/dcartiersr/sets/72157594420812359/ Here's what David says about this source of inspiration: " When Men lack a sense of awe, There will be disaster " - - - - Lao Tzu --- The Tao Teh Ching Awe is what THIS is all about!! The Aurora is an experience of breathtaking beauty... the viewing makes you feel like you are connected integrally with an amazing cosmic force ..... Aurora watching is as addictive as any drug and a whole lot more satisfying. Once you become addicted, you stay out all night, lose sleep, forget about social commitments, nearly get wind burned and frostbit and it's all, deeply, worth it !! Every human being who can manage it should make a pilgrimage to the subarctic auroral zone in order to see and feel this at least once in their life. Many of these were taken with an amazing old Russian Kiev-19 35mm SLR. This camera , which I still use for night sky photos, NEVER freezes up or has any shutter problems in the cold, even at minus 60!! The more expensive Japanese and German cameras which I own always, or at least often, stop functioning in the deep cold. "Northern Lights", the song, is now heard on Allison Crowe's "Little Lights" album.

Time After Time (Cyndi Lauper) - Allison Crowe live - 229 sec
Allison Crowe, a child of the '80s, performs one of her favourites of that era in concert - a cover of Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman's "Time After Time". (A song being heard in the repertoire of Lauper on her "True Colors" tour. This vid audio recording is heard on Allison Crowe's "Little Light" CD album.) This recording (thanks Scott LJ for the audio!) comes from the same pre-Christmas '06 concert as does the version of "I Never Loved a Man" also here on YouTube. With this song, there is no concert footage available, and, so, inspired by the example of Cylune, one of the great artistic Web 2.0 vidders, I've made my own, very simple (primitive?!), vid to accompany the music. Thanks muchly to Steve for capturing the images of Allison's hometown glory - in Canada's Winter time!
